Where the Heck is Demi Moore?

She's out of the hospital, that much we know. But based on the panic on one end of the recently-released 911 call, Demi Moore is far from out of the woods.

So where is the troubled star at the moment? An insider tells E! News Moore is NOT enrolled in a rehab program, but she has been undergoing some kind of "spiritual counseling," while, presumably, still living at home.

Daughters Tallulah and Rumer, meanwhile, are residing at their father's Los Angeles condo.

Rumer Willis and Demi Moore

Rumer, however, spent at least one fun night on the town this weekend.

Various sources report she ate dinner on Saturday with Annie Starke, Annie's mother Glenn Close and Close's husband David Shaw at Comme Ça in West Hollywood, before ending the evening at Chateau Marmont.

Willis has been in the news lately because she spent a lot of time with her mother prior to Demi's hospitalization last week, with evidence seeming to point to Rumer actually being present when the 911 call was placed.

"The Artist" wins over producers at Guild Awards (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? "The Artist" continued its love affair with American cinema after winning best-produced film on Saturday at the Producers Guild Awards (PGA), boosting its chances for an Oscar nod ahead of the Academy Award nominations next week.

The silent black-and-white French comedy, starring Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo, is a homage to the pre-talkie era of Hollywood in the 1920s and tells the story of a fading silent movie star as sound began entering the world of cinema.

"When Michel Hazanavicius and I dreamed of making "The Artist," we knew we were dreaming of writing a love letter to American cinema. We never knew in return we would get a taste of the American dream," Thomas Langmann, the film's producer, said in his acceptance speech in Beverly Hills.

The film has been sweeping awards ceremonies in the run up to the Oscars, winning best picture at the Critics Choice and Golden Globes earlier this month.

It was up against nine other films in contention for best-produced film on Saturday, including female-led comedy "Bridesmaids," civil rights drama "The Help," and Steven Spielberg's epic tale "War Horse."

"The Adventures of Tintin," produced by Spielberg, Peter Jackson and Kathleen Kennedy, picked up best-produced animated film.

The Producers Guild awards are significant in the race to the Academy Awards on February 26, as many of the 5,000-plus members of the PGA, are members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who vote for the Oscars.

For the last four years, the producers' best-produced film picks have gone on to win the best picture Oscar, with "No Country For Old Men" in 2008, "Slumdog Millionaire" in 2009, "The Hurt Locker" in 2010 and "The King's Speech" in 2011.

Other PGA award winners on Saturday included "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest" for best-produced documentary, which explores the journey of influential hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest.

Angelina Jolie received the Stanley Kramer award for "In the Land of Blood and Honey," which she wrote, directed and produced, an accolade reserved for contributions that highlight provocative social issues.

The Oscar-winning actress delivered a sober acceptance speech, noting that when war-film "Schindler's List" won a PGA in 1994 during the Bosnian war, "the world turned a blind eye" to the atrocities happening in Eastern Europe at the time.

Spielberg was awarded the coveted David O. Selznick achievement award and comic-book legend Stan Lee received the Vanguard award, presented by "Spider-Man" actor Tobey Maguire. Both received standing ovations as they took the stage.

ABC's "Modern Family" was named best-produced television comedy for the second year running, while HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" was named best-produced TV drama. PBS' British period drama "Downton Abbey" was named best-produced long-form television series.

(AP Photo/Rebecca Blackwell, File)

(AP) ? Thousands of people died needlessly and millions of dollars were wasted because the international community did not respond fast enough to early signs of famine in East Africa, aid agencies said Wednesday, while warning of a new hunger crisis in West Africa.

Most rich donor nations waited until the crisis in the Horn of Africa was in full swing before donating a substantial amount of money, according to the report by aid groups Oxfam and Save the Children. A food shortage had been predicted as early as August 2010, but most donors did not respond until famine was declared in parts of Somalia in July 2011.

The report even blamed aid agencies, saying they were too slow to scale up their response.

"We all bear responsibility for this dangerous delay that cost lives in East Africa and need to learn the lessons of the late response," said Oxfam head Barbara Stocking.

The British government estimates that between 50,000 and 100,000 people died from the famine, mostly Somalis. Ethiopia and Kenya were also affected but aid agencies were able to work more easily there than in war-ravaged Somalia.

More than half of those who died are believed to be children. The United Nations says 250,000 Somalis are still at risk of starvation and more than 13 million people need aid.

Among the report's findings:

? Donors expressed concern that Ethiopia underestimated the number of people in need and found that the lack of timely, accurate information made it more difficult to provide aid. Ethiopian government figures published in February 2011 said 2.8 million people were in need, and those figures were revised two months later and again in July 2011 to 4.5 million people.

? Kenya's food aid system carries out need assessments only twice a year, which end up being several months out of date. It added that corruption and political distractions, including a new constitution, reduced the national capacity to respond, although it said the reaction of the Kenyan public to the crisis was "substantial."

? The situation was much worse in southern and central Somalia, where conflict and militancy prevented traditional drought responses and reduced the ability of aid groups to help.

One Kenyan economist said it would have been difficult to prevent the famine in south-central Somalia, which is mostly controlled by militants from al-Shabab, an insurgent group that has greatly limited what aid agencies can do in the region.

"I don't think the solution to famine is just sending money in good time," said economist James Shikwati. "It also needs policy changes. Look at Somalia. (Even) if you have all the money in your pocket and all the grain in your store, unless al-Shabab allows you to access their areas, then people there are still going to starve."

The report said many donors wanted to first see proof that there was a humanitarian catastrophe, and that caused a funding shortfall that delayed a large-scale response to the crisis by about six months.

Governments, donors, aid groups and the U.N. need to change their approach to such disasters to help a larger number of people during the next hunger crisis, the report said.

Ethiopia was able to minimize the effects of the drought because of the promotion of disaster risk management policy and practice, the report said.

"This contrasts with Somalia, where such work has been largely absent, due to access restrictions, a complex environment and the unwillingness of donors to invest," it said.

Now, there are clear signs of an impending hunger crisis in West Africa, said Justin Forsyth, head of Save the Children. The report said a food crisis in the West African region known as the Sahel is being driven by drought and high food prices. The report says agencies should put into practice there what has been learned in the Somalia crisis.

A recent Save the Children assessment in Niger shows families in the worst-hit areas are already struggling with around one-third less food, money and fuel than is necessary to survive.

Besides Niger, the other countries at risk are Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Mali and Chad, said Alun McDonald, regional spokesman for Oxfam.

Friday will mark six months since the U.N. declared famine in Somalia.

"The earlier you respond, the more you get for your money," McDonald said.

Trucking just over a gallon (5 liters) of water per day per person to 80,000 people in Ethiopia costs more than $3 million for five months, the report said, compared with $900,000 to prepare water sources in the same area for an oncoming drought.

"We've done a lot of water trucking. It's the last resort," McDonald said. "It's a very expensive and inefficient way of delivering water."

"It's much more cost-effective to invest early on" in things like dams, reservoirs, and boreholes, he said.

The report also said it costs three times as much to restock a herd in northern Kenya than to keep it alive through supplementary feeding.

"The world knows an emergency is coming but ignores it until confronted with TV pictures of desperately malnourished children," Forsyth said.

The World Food Program says that even though the worst of the crisis appears to be over, hundreds of thousands of people will still need food aid in the coming months to survive because their livestock have died and crops have not yet grown.

Earlier this week, food donated by Cargill, the Minnesota-based producer and marketer of food, agricultural, financial and industrial products, was delivered to needy communities in Kenya. Cargill donated 10,000 metric tons of rice to WFP USA to be distributed in the Horn of Africa.

The group said the donation ? the largest ever food donation to WFP USA ? would feed nearly 1 million people for a month.

HHS Says Trustmark's Planned Insurance Rate Hikes Are ...

The insurance company, whose proposed increases would have taken place in five states, has a very different view of the situation.

The Hill: HHS Deems Insurance Rate Hikes 'Unreasonable' In 5 States
The Obama administration said Thursday that increases in healthcare premiums in five states are "unreasonable." The Health and Human Services Department said Trustmark Life Insurance Co. is pursuing unnecessary rate hikes in five states. The new healthcare law allows HHS to review rates and classify them as unreasonable, but the department cannot stop the rates from taking effect (Baker, 1/12).

Kaiser Health News Capsules blog: HHS Calls Trustmark's Rate Increases 'Unreasonable'; Insurer Begs To Differ
[The company] proposed health insurance premium hikes of 13 percent for 10,000 residents in five states: Arizona, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wyoming, according to HHS. When combined with other rate hikes made over the last year, premiums for small businesses in Alabama and Arizona, had increased by 27.2 percent and 18.1 percent, respectively?(Carey, 1/12).

The New York Times: U.S. Seeks Rollback Of A Health Insurer's 'Excessive' Rate Increase
The action fits in with White House efforts to demonstrate the value of the new health care law and to portray President Obama as fighting for the economic interests of middle-class families in this election year.?Cindy Gallaher, a spokeswoman for Trustmark, based in Lake Forest, Ill., said: ...?"Our premiums are driven by the rising cost and increased utilization of medical services"?(Pear, 1/12).

GM, Ford report strong China sales in December

(AP)? BEIJING ? General Motors and Ford are reporting strong December sales in China but say full-year growth was down from previous double-digit levels.

GM said Monday that sales of GM-branded vehicles by the company and its Chinese partners rose 9.8 percent in December over a year earlier to a new high for that month. It said sales for the full year rose 8.3 percent to a new record of 2.5 million vehicles.

Ford said December sales rose 10 percent over a year earlier, helping to push up sales for the year by 7 percent to 519,390 vehicles.

Automakers are looking to China's relatively robust market to drive sales amid weak growth elsewhere. China overtook the United States as the biggest market by vehicles sold in 2009.

Car sales in China rose more than 30 percent in 2010 after the government cut sales taxes and offered subsidies to spur demand but growth slowed after those incentives ended.

Brad Pitt: Injured Carrying Vivienne, Walking With Cane

Being injured is worth it if it the children are okay.

That's how Brad Pitt summed up his recent injury at the Palm Springs International Film Festival gala this weekend, explaining to the press corps that he hurt himself when he suffered a fall while carrying daughter Vivienne.

The upshot: Viv is fine. He walks with a cane now:

Brad Pitt, Cane

"When [Maddox] was younger, I took a fall and cracked my elbow because I wanted to make sure he didn't have the fall," said Angelina Jolie, by his side.

"Every parent has injured themselves at some point," the father of six added. "Every parent will stand in the line of fire for their kids so it's a normal thing."

So is Brad milking the injury at home?

"He's not that kind of guy," she said. "He does everything still."

"I'm proud of him every single day," Jolie said of Pitt, who was presented the Desert Palm Achievement Award by his Moneyball co-star Jonah Hill.

Get well soon, Brad. But nice cane man.

Toshiba trots out TransMemory-EX USB 3.0-compliant flash memory

It seems like just yesterday that Tosh outed its original TransMemory lineup... ah, who are we kidding? 2007 was about a century ago. Flashbacks aside, Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC) has announced that it'll be demonstrating the new TransMemory-EX series of USB flash memory products here at CES. The new sticks are compliant with USB 3.0 standards, with initial storage capacities set for 32GB and 64GB. The new kit uses Toshiba's DDR NAND, offering maximum data transfer rates of 220MB/sec on the read side and 94MB/sec on the writes. For those keeping score, that's 22 times and 18 times faster than the company's prior models, respectively. We're told that the new products can transfer 25GB of video in around five minutes, which would take the prior model around a half-hour. Mum's the world on commercial availability, but you can find the press release just after the break.

Le Pan rolls out a trio of Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich tablets for penny pinchers

Ice Cream Sandwich on a budget? That's what Le Pan is promising at CES today, with a trio of new tablets. The higher end of the two is the Le Pan III, an Android 4.0-laced slate that's powered by a 1.5GHz, dual-core TI-OMAP 4460 processor, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. This Bluetooth 4.0-enabled device also comes with a five-megapixel rear camera and a two-megapixel front-facing shooter, and supports 1080p video output. Joining the Le Pan II is the TC978, which features just about the same specs, save for a slightly lower octane (1GHz) processor, and the lack of a five-megapixel camera. The Le Pan II, meanwhile, ships with Android 3.2 Honeycomb rather than Ice Cream Sandwich, but can make the jump to 4.0 with a simple upgrade. The device features a 9.7-inch display at 1024 x 768 resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, but the rest of its specs are just about identical to those of the TC978. No word yet on when the Le Pan III and TC978 will hit the market, but the Le Pan II is already available on Amazon for $300. You can grab it now at the link below, or head past the break for a spoonful of PR.

Hawaii mystery: Who's killing monk seals?

Two Hawaiian monk seals were found bludgeoned to death on a remote coast of Molokai ? one was killed in mid-November and the other shortly before Christmas. Earlier this month, a dead seal showed up on Kauai. A fourth possible killing on Molokai is also under investigation.

No one knows who is killing the seals ? a critically endangered species ? or why.

But the deaths are coming as the federal government steps up its efforts to protect the seals, leading to simmering resentment among some fishermen who fear new regulations will trample upon their right to fish. The killings are also happening as the misguided notion spreads that the animals aren't native to Hawaii and don't belong here.

"It's really serious. This attitude, this negative attitude toward the seals has overpowered the concern that this is a species that's going to become extinct," said Walter Ritte, a Molokai resident and longtime activist who has sounded an alarm about the killings.

Like pandas, the seals are adored by many humans for being cute, though their lazy demeanor and pudgy appearance belies the strength of a wild animal. Also like pandas, the animal is dangerously close to disappearing. There are only 1,100 left in the world, and scientists say the seal is on course to vanish in 50 to 100 years.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration last year proposed two initiatives to give the seals a better shot at surviving.

One would temporarily bring a few seals from the remote Northwestern Hawaiian Islands ? where competition for food and predators mean only a dismal 20 percent of seal pups live to be adults ? to the main Hawaiian Islands.

There aren't as many sharks to prey on seal pups, or large fish to compete with seal pups for food, around Kauai, Oahu, Maui and other places in the main Hawaiian Islands. This gives seals in this area, which is also where the state's 1.4 million people live, an 80 percent chance of living to adulthood.

NOAA is also proposing to expand federally protected zones ? or critical habitat ? for the seal to include parts of the main Hawaiian Islands. Parts of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands have been designated critical habitat since the 1980s.

Neil Kanemoto, a lifelong recreational fisherman, said he didn't know who was killing the seals. He pointed out the last person to be convicted of killing a seal, a 78-year-old man who shot a pregnant monk seal on Kauai in 2009, was not a fisherman.

But he said fishermen and locals are unhappy with the new regulations NOAA wants, and the agency wasn't doing enough to work with local people to manage the situation. People may end up taking out their frustration on the seals, Kanemoto said.

"The point is, don't shove this down people's throats," he said. "They're making it an issue, and as a result, the poor monk seal may ? I'm not saying it is ? may fall victim to repercussions from locals."

He said he wouldn't be surprised of if more seals were killed.

"It's not going to end. My position is, if the feds keep pushing in this way, it's going to increase," Kanemoto said.

Ritte said part of the problem was that older people, who didn't see many seals growing up or hear about them from their elders, are spreading the word that the seals don't belong in Hawaii.

Cyberbusted: Sea turtle boots, leopard skin coat

A NOAA report released last year showed 35 percent of those surveyed at beaches and popular fishing areas on Kauai and Molokai believed the seals aren't native to the islands.

This is contradicted by archaeological digs that found monk seal bones in a human trash pit dating between the 15th and 18th centuries. The Hawaiian creation chant, the Kumulipo, also mentions a creature like a monk seal ? "a rat running beside the wave."

By the early 1900s, however, most monk seals in the main Hawaiian Islands had been hunted and killed for their meat and fur. Even until a decade ago, it was rare to encounter one in the main islands.

Ritte said the seals have been showing up regularly on Molokai, a rural island of just 7,000 people, for about the past seven years. They've started to compete with subsistence fishermen who are already catching less because pollution runoff and overfishing have depleted fish stocks in the area.

The issue is serious on Molokai, where the unemployment rate hovers over 15 percent and where people get one-third of their food from hunting, fishing, and gathering.

"So here you have a fisherman. He's been walking two to three hours to get to his fishing grounds over rough terrain. And then he runs into these seals. And it causes him to get only half his catch and a quarter of his catch," Ritte said. "I think that is the essence of why."

He said the NOAA's proposals are making things worse.

"It's like fuel to the fire," he said.

Hawaiian tradition
NOAA says moving a few seals to the main Hawaiian Islands was the only feasible and effective way to address the high mortality rate for seals in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Further, it says critical habitats aren't intended to prevent public access to beaches and oceans. The agency says it wants to continue talking to fishermen and to address their concerns.

Ritte believes no one would kill the seals if they understood the animals have been in Hawaii for millions of years.

He said the state and federal governments and environmentalists need to get the word out quickly that the seals belong here. Usually he would say everyone should focus on educating the children, so they'll grow up knowing better. But he said that approach may not work this time.

"I don't think we have that luxury because the seals might be gone by then. So we need to hit this generation. That's going to take a lot of effort," he said.

William Aila, the head of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, said the state was preparing a monetary reward for information that leads to the conviction of those responsible. He said the department would also link its website to a page with information on the deep roots monk seals have in Hawaiian tradition.

"We have a responsibility to do our part to help this species recover," he said.

HBT: Angels not looking to trade Trumbo

By adding Albert Pujols to a roster already well-stocked with first basemen and corner outfielders the Angels created a logjam that seemingly pointed to a trade.

Speculation centered on Mark Trumbo, because he?s 25 years old and the Rookie of the Year runner-up, but yesterday general manager Jerry Dipoto indicated that the Angels aren?t shopping him ? or anyone for that matter.

?I don?t think we?re in position to move anybody,? Dipoto told Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register. ?In the American League, you?re able to get at-bats a number of ways?DH, the corner spots in the infield and the outfield. ? Mark has an opportunity to make an impact on our club for years.?

Trumbo is also recovering from a broken foot and his timetable has already been pushed back twice, so getting maximum value for him in a trade would be tough right now anyway. Beyond that Kendrys Morales? health status remains uncertain two years after his broken leg, so the Angels? logjam is more like a potential logjam if everyone is healthy.

And of course they?re still holding out some hope that Trumbo can move to third base on at least a part-time basis, which would make it a lot easier to divvy up the at-bats. However, he?s never seen any time at the position as a professional and very few people outside the Angels front office seem to think he?s capable of being anything more than significantly below average there defensively.

Once stud prospect Mike Trout is ready to stick in the majors for good and/or Morales is ready to play again it?s tough to imagine the Angels not making a move, but those issues may not be forced by Opening Day.

CSN: Zambrano trade to Miami was inevitable

?

The Carlos Zambrano trade was viewed as a matter of when ? not if ? and realistically only one team would be a match.

It comes as no surprise that the Cubs are on the verge of sending Zambrano ? and $15 million ? to the Miami Marlins as part of a package for 25-year-old pitcher Chris Volstad.

Zambrano will be taking his talents to South Beach because of the strength of his relationship with Ozzie Guillen. No other manager would be so willing to take on the explosive, enigmatic pitcher.

The entire industry knows Zambrano?s greatest hits ? slamming Gatorade coolers, fighting with Michael Barrett, going after Derrek Lee, walking out on his teammates last season.

But there was Guillen, walking quickly through the lobby of the Hilton Anatole during last month?s winter meetings in Dallas. Trailed by reporters, Guillen explained how he had a bet with a friend that Zambrano will win more than 14 games for the Cubs in 2012.

?Now if they trade him, well, I?d take it,? Guillen said while being hustled to yet another media stop.

The inevitable deal ? first reported by Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports on Wednesday and confirmed by CSNChicago?s David Kaplan ? was ultimately just going to be about the details. Volstad is a former first-round pick who?s eligible for arbitration and won?t become a free agent until after the 2014 season.

The Cubs had moved on long ago, with ownership giving Theo Epstein the authority to eat the money on a sunk cost. The new president of baseball operations has preached all about accountability and clubhouse chemistry.

A rebuilding organization didn?t need Zambrano taking up all the oxygen in the room. Even people close to Zambrano admitted that he could use a fresh start somewhere else, and predicted he would be hungry to prove himself all over again.

Zambrano did seem to enjoy living and playing in Chicago, even if he had strange ways of showing it. Signed as a 16-year-old kid out of Venezuela, he has spent almost half his life in the Cubs organization.

Zambrano held the hammer of full no-trade protection. But waiving those rights figured to be a formality with Guillen involved.

The good friends remained in regular communication throughout the offseason. Their families are close. They have shot commercials together back home in Venezuela.

The Marlins need rotation help, which makes paying a fourth-starter-type $3 million this season a low-risk proposition. (The contract also includes a $19.25 million long-shot vesting option for 2013, though that?s only if Zambrano finishes this season healthy and among the top four in the Cy Young vote.)

For a team that has struggled to break through the clutter in the Miami market ? and is about to move into a brand-new stadium in Little Havana ? this is also another way to generate buzz.

The theory is that Guillen will be there to challenge Zambrano to stay focused and channel all that adrenaline.

Zambrano has a very good sense of humor, teasing reporters and making movie references to ?Rocky IV? and ?RoboCop.? People inside the Cubs organization talked about his genuine feel for his family and charitable causes.

But the Cubs also swore that the money changed Zambrano almost as soon as he signed a five-year, $91.5 million extension during the middle of the 2007 season.

It all boiled over again one night last August, when the Atlanta Braves hammered Zambrano, who threw at Chipper Jones, packed up his stuff and left Turner Field during the middle of the game. In another moment of frustration, he began telling people that he felt like he was stealing money and thinking about retirement.

It was a safe bet that Zambrano ? who had a 4.82 ERA when he was effectively suspended ? had thrown his last pitch in a Cubs uniform. He exits with a 125-81 career record in Chicago and 1,542 strikeouts, which ranks second in franchise history.

On paper, those are good numbers, but Zambrano hasn?t accounted for more than 200 innings since 2007. He?s freakishly athletic, a gifted soccer player and switch-hitter who just happened to be built like an NFL defensive end. Maybe he can put it all together for one season in Miami.

But it wasn?t going to happen on the North Side. There are enough holdovers from the Jim Hendry administration that Epstein knew all about Zambrano?s act, how many times he had to say sorry.

Surely Epstein, general manager Jed Hoyer and manager Dale Sveum noticed that they were asked about Zambrano just about any time a microphone was put in front of their faces. Why make that the narrative?

You know what the story will be when the Cubs visit Miami April 17-19, and when the Marlins come to Wrigley Field July 17-19.

Zambrano was gold for the Chicago media. The Cubs world will be a far less interesting place without him. But in the end, both sides needed this divorce.?

Long Beach's gay community faced good and bad news in '11

In Long Beach's sizeable gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, there was good and bad news - and newsmakers - in 2011.

Some made our "Fabulist," and others made the "Not-So-Fabulist."

The Fabulist

THE CARE PROGRAM

The program, which is based at St. Mary Medical Center, celebrated its 25 th anniversary. CARE is the largest nonprofit HIV-AIDS care provider in the Long Beach area.

LEE GLAZE

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence recognized the former Long Beach resident and Paramount native for "sainthood." Glaze, 73, an early gay-rights pioneer, was honored for his work in fighting gay discrimination.

JENELLE HUTCHERSON

The 26-year-old hairstylist and Long Beach resident was the first "out" lesbian contestant in the Miss Long Beach pageant, which was formed in 1950. Hutcherson was a finalist, but didn't win.

Hutcherson has her sights on another crown - being possibly the first "out" lesbian contestant in the Miss California USA pageant, which takes place Friday through Jan. 8, when it will be broadcast on NBC.

LAURA FARINELLA

The Long Beach Police Department reached a milestone in its 103-year history - it promoted its first female and its first gay or lesbian officer to the rank of deputy chief of police.

Farinella officially became deputy chief at a September swearing-in ceremony. Farinella had been a commander and chief of staff to Police Chief Jim McDonnell.

JULIO SALGADO

Salgado is out, proud and unapologetic - he's gay, and he's undocumented. The 28-year-old Long Beach resident, who came to the United States as a child, graduated from Cal State Long Beach in May 2010 with a journalism degree, but his immigration status makes finding work a frustrating challenge.

Earlier this year, Salgado and three other undocumented youths launched the website "Dreamers Adrift," where they share their experiences of life after college graduation.

THE SILVER FOX

This neighborhood watering hole at 411 Redondo Ave. celebrated its 30 th anniversary.

The Not So Fabulist

DISCRIMINATION SUIT

Two Long Beach women filed a lawsuit in December against a Hawaii bed and breakfast, saying the business denied them a room because they are lesbian.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the women by Lambda Legal, claims Aloha Bed & Breakfast discriminated against Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford.

9-11 SCAMMER

Patric Ian Henn - a convicted felon from Florida who scammed two relief agencies out of more than $68,000 in benefits following 9-11, and was known in Long Beach as the flamboyant, openly gay gossip blogger "Boy About Town" - was sentenced in September to a year in Los Angeles County jail by a Long Beach Superior Court judge.

Henn, 36, was sentenced for not appearing at the July 2010 restitution hearing. The judge also ordered Henn to pay $2,832.61 in damages for hitting a 1997 Toyota Camry while driving under the influence on Ocean Boulevard.

PAUL DUNCAN DIES

Duncan, director of community outreach for the Long Beach Community Business Network (aka, the Long Beach Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce), was a tireless advocate. He helped new and existing gay and gay-friendly businesses create lifelong bonds with other members of the community, says Stacey O'Byrne, president of the LBCBN.

Duncan, 72, died Aug. 6 in Las Vegas. He had been representing the business network at the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce's weeklong conference there.

JEAN HARRIS DIES

Harris was a trailblazer. For more than 30 years, the former Long Beach resident was on the cutting edge of gay and lesbian politics.

She helped organize numerous campaigns in San Francisco and Long Beach. Harris also built grass-roots, nonpartisan LGBT political advocacy groups throughout California.

Harris, 66, died in June at her home in Palm Springs.

HIV/AIDS RATE

Seventy-three percent of HIV positive men in Long Beach contracted the disease through male-to-male sexual contact. The Long Beach AIDS incidence rate is 100 percent higher than Los Angeles County's and more than double the state's, according to the Health Department's HIV/AIDS Monitoring Report for 2011.

HATE CRIMES

Marquise Anton Lucas, 19, and Sierus Lamar Dunbar, 27, were ordered in December to stand trial in connection with a Halloween hate crime against two gay men.

Jorge Jhovanoy Ibarrias, 21, of Torrance was sentenced to five years in state prison for a July hate crime against a gay man.

Olivier Saintvictor was sentenced to prison for vandalism hate crimes in December 2010 of two well-known Long Beach gay establishments and one Redondo Beach gay bar. The 23-year-old Rancho Palos Verdes man also agreed to pay $2,607 in restitution for damage caused to the Gay and Lesbian Center of Greater Long Beach, Club Ripples in Long Beach and the Dolphin Bar in Redondo Beach and its owner.

Real Estate Brokers For Veterans of Fairfield County CT- A Facebook Group to Help Veterans - Join In!

I have joined a Facebook group started by J Philip Faranda of Westchester County, NY for like-minded brokerages who feel that this

Real Estate Brokers For Veterans

would be a worthy endeavor. If you'd like to join us, please log into the? Real Estate Brokers For?Veterans group and add your name to the list of brokers- this way, we can have a list of colleagues in the different markets to whom we can refer veterans when the opportunity arises. As J Philip said, "the late Joe Ferrara often said that real estate licensees should have pro bono obligations just as attorneys. We don't, so this is strictly voluntary and so worthwhile. "

If you are a broker who is interested in giving back to the troops by helping a veteran family in need, please only do this if you are properly able.?? Only give if you can. ? But if you can, please do log on and join.?? If you are a broker and feel this is a worthy cause, please join us.

If you know of any veteran family in need of my help in the Fairfield County (CT) area, please email me.

J. Philip Faranda? started this Facebook Group to benefit the veterans everywhere, and I have opted to join in to help in my area. ?

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

This group is for real estate brokers who pledge in 2012 to list and sell the home of a US service veteran facing hardship pro bono. This is our way of giving back and thanking these veterans for their sacrifices in preserving our freedom and our way of life.
?
There is one thing I am going to do in my little corner of the world to make a difference to a veteran in the next 12 months.?I will list and sell one veteran's house in the next year pro bono.?They have to have a special need of some sort (it can be financial) because it is a waste to do it for a vet who is flush with cash or in a short sale, but so long as there is a DD-214 and the possibility of an equity advantage I'll get it done for this veteran gratis as my way of giving back. I can do this for?one veteran (or their survivors)in Fairfield County (CT). There is minimal small print to the offer, because I can't guarantee that a buyer brokerage will be cool with forgoing their end, but there will be no listing commission.?
If you know of a veteran who needs to sell and a pro bono arrangement would make a difference between hardship or not, please let me know via phone or email.?
?
For those who want to help otherwise, the Fisher House is an excellent alternative to give back!

Poll: Romney, Gingrich Tied In Florida

As Florida voters begin to focus on the state?s pivotal GOP presidential primary at the end of January, the leading contenders are former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia, according to a poll by TelOpinion Research.

Romney and Gingrich are essentially in a statistical dead heat, with Romney leading with 27 percent of the vote to Gingrich?s 26, according to the telephone survey of 780 Republican voters, conducted from Dec. 15-19.

Bill Lee, a Republican pollster who co-founded TelOpinion, said that matches the national pattern, with Romney and Gingrich drawing most of the media attention.

?Leading into Iowa, this is essentially a tie ball game between those two,? Lee said.

The trend also matches an ideological split that appears to have hampered Romney?s drive to the nomination: Doubts remain about him among the most conservative elements of the Republican Party and religious conservatives. Among self-identified members of the tea-party movement, Gingrich leads by eight points, 28-16. The two men almost evenly divide other voters, 28-26 in favor of Romney.

Gingrich also leads by 14 percentage points among very conservative voters, while Romney holds a 15-point edge among those who call themselves ?somewhat conservative.? The two are essentially tied among moderates, with Gingrich holding a 20-17 advantage.

Gingrich also leads Romney among those who attend church more than once a week, with those who go to church weekly about evenly split. Voters who attend less frequently favor Romney, often strongly.

The poll was conducted just as Gingrich, who surged to the front of the pack on the strength of debate performances, saw his numbers begin to slip in Iowa and elsewhere under a barrage of attacks from his competitors and so-called Super PACs supporting them.

And 31 percent of Republican voters in Florida said they hadn?t decided who to back, meaning the race remains volatile with about a month to go before the Jan. 31 primary.

None of their other competitors hit double digits. Texas Congressman Ron Paul, whose libertarian streak has vaulted him into contention in Iowa, holds just 5 percent of the votes of those surveyed by TelOpinion. Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann and Texas Gov. Rick Perry ? who had hoped to perform strongly in Florida ? were next, tied at 4 percent.
Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, who had initially based his campaign in Florida before shifting his focus to New Hampshire, was tied with former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum with 1 percent.

Brian Graham, a Republican consultant in Florida not aligned with any of the candidates, said he wasn?t surprised that the candidates drawing the most coverage are getting the highest numbers.

?They are the candidates with the most name ID,? Graham said. ?This is a big state. ? Most candidates haven?t paid much attention to Florida right now.?

As votes roll in from early states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and candidates ramp up their efforts in Florida, Graham said the situation could change, even beyond the voters who call themselves undecided.

?I would highly doubt that any of the voters are truly, truly firmly decided on their candidates,? he said.

The poll was another dose of bad news for Perry, who had taken a lead in the state shortly after announcing his candidacy but before a series of debate gaffes undermined his candidacy.

Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon, one of Perry?s earliest supporters, brushed aside a question earlier this month about whether he was surprised that the governor?s campaign had failed to gain traction.

?I think if anything, I?m surprised at the overall ups and downs of all of the candidates,? Cannon said.

Graham said Perry?s gaffes had badly hurt him among Republican voters who are concerned chiefly with defeating President Barack Obama in the November elections.

?I think that a lot of Republicans were uncomfortable with Rick Perry?s inability to perform well with public speaking and the debates,? he said.

But Lee said the 31 percent undecided bloc could still make room for one more candidate with the necessary resources if it moves beyond Iowa and the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire. Perry raised millions before his troubles began.

?The third player might be Governor Perry,? Lee said.

SBStickyNotes: A Cydia Tweak To Add Notes Directly To Your iPhone?s Springboard

Advertisements

Another day, another iOS 5 tweak and this time it is the turn of developer Fr0zen Sun to release his latest tweak to the growing number of jailbroken iOS 5 users. Thanks to the hard work of pod2g, the Chronic Dev Team and the iPhone Dev Team developers releasing tweaks intended for use on version five of Apple?s mobile operating system now have a much larger audience.

Cydia Logo

Fr0zen Sun is a developer who has been around the community for quite some time, and although his name may be unfamiliar to most the chances are jailbroken users have come across one of his tweaks during their many ritualistic Cydia browsing sessions. He currently has over fifteen small tweaks available within Cydia, of which the most notable are Home Button in Safari, Photo Images Upload, IconCommands and now SBStickyNotes.

So just what is SBStickyNotes I hear you ask? Well, the more discerning among you can probably work out from the title just what it is that this tweak does. The concept of sticky notes isn?t a new one, many applications and programs exist for the Mac OS X and Windows operating system, which offer the ability to create notes and ?stick? them to your desktop. I have even created websites which mimic the functionality of sticky notes using CSS3 and HTML5, so the concept is an old one.

sbstickynotes2

I would imagine that people who find themselves behind a computer screen most days on end have used a sticky note application in one form or another whether it be to create an easy access to-do list or just to pin a simple personal reminder to desktop. When talking about mobile devices a number of problems need to be overcome in order to produce a working tweak of this nature.

SBStickyNotes

Fr0zen Sun has managed to produce a tweak which elegantly overcomes the problems associated with creating a sticky notes solution on a mobile device. The tweak hooks directly into the native iOS notes application to extend the functionality by adding a new option which pins the note to the Springboard. When the option is tapped the tweak creates an icon on the Springboard, very similar to how Safari handles adding a webpage to the home screen.

The icon pulls the title directly from the top line of the note and adds this under the Springboard selector. Tapping the icon beautifully animates the note into view, displaying all of the text in a window which looks like it has been influenced by the Tweet Sheet contained within the iOS 5 Twitter framework. The tweak also contains a preferences entry which allows you to control the animation speed and change the tint color of the note using RGB values.

SBStickyNotes is a nice example of how to overcome and handle a problem area elegantly. The tweak is available free of charge on the Big Boss Cydia repository and requires iOS 5 or higher.

You will obviously need to have jailbroken device to run it. For jailbreaking iOS 5 untethered, follow our complete step by step instructions posted here to jailbreak iPhone, iPad, iPod touch on iOS 5.0.1 using Redsn0w.

Hollywood's take on Obama: Less gushing this time (AP)

NEW YORK ? Hollywood loves the Next Big Thing, and four years ago, that was Barack Obama, the equivalent of a breakout movie star.

"He is `The One,'" said Oprah Winfrey, his biggest and most influential celebrity champion.

"The best candidate I've ever seen," said George Clooney.

Halle Berry said she'd "collect paper cups off the ground to make his pathway clear." Black Eyed Peas frontman will.i.am chimed in with the famous "Yes We Can" video.

But you can't be the Next Big Thing twice and as a new election year dawns, there's clearly a different mood in heavily Democratic Hollywood.

That means less gushing, not to mention snippets of criticism, most prominently from actor Matt Damon, who campaigned for Obama last time but now makes no secret of his disillusionment.

"I think he misinterpreted his mandate," Damon said earlier this year. He recently told Elle magazine the country would have been better off with a one-term president with guts, although he used a saltier word.

The adulation of the 2008 election may be significantly muted among Hollywood liberals, as with liberals elsewhere, but Obama's supporters say that's only natural, given the circumstances. Fundraisers there say that events have been selling out and there's plenty of enthusiasm.

They also say the nation has focused on the GOP race to pick a challenger to Obama and that once that choice is made, the Democratic base will become energized.

"The moment the Republicans have their nominee is when you're going to see anyone still on the fence jump in," says Chad Griffin, a Los Angeles-based communications strategist and Democratic fundraiser. "Once you have a head-to-head matchup, the contrast will be grand."

Numbers compiled by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics show that while overall political contributions were up in Hollywood for the first three-quarters of this year compared with the same period four years ago, contributions to Democrats were slightly down.

According to the group, the movie, television and recording industries gave $17,639,267 in the first three-quarters to federal candidates and parties. The breakdown was 71 percent to the Democrats and 29 percent to Republicans, as opposed to $15,642,561 four years ago, when 77 percent went to the Democrats and 23 percent to Republicans.

But numbers for the Democrats were down by more than $2.5 million from four years ago ? $9,249,303 this year compared with $11,966,077 four years ago.

Obama's fundraisers note that four years ago, Obama was locked in a tense primary battle with Hillary Rodham Clinton, and primaries drive early fundraising.

"A re-election is always different," says Andy Spahn, a longtime political adviser to one of the top Democratic fundraisers in the nation, DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, along with his partners Steven Spielberg and David Geffen.

He calls the current mood among Hollywood Democrats a "matured enthusiasm," but says support is strong.

Though Damon's remarks about the president have been the most pointed, other celebrities have expressed disappointment, or at least mild disillusionment.

"I love the president like most of us," Sean "Diddy" Combs told Source magazine this year. "I just want the president to do better."

And will.i.am, creator of that viral video that ended with the word "HOPE," told The New York Times earlier this year: "I don't want to hope anymore." Asked if he was disappointed in Obama, he said: "I don't feel disappointed. I feel like, Argggh! Speak louder! I feel like, Do something!"

What about core Obama celebrity supporters Clooney and Winfrey? Far from being disillusioned with Obama, Clooney said recently: "I'm disillusioned by the people who are disillusioned by Obama."

"Democrats eat their own," the actor said. "I'm a firm believer in sticking by and sticking up for the people whom you've elected." He went on to list the accomplishments of the Obama administration, wondering why Democrats weren't selling them better.

Winfrey, credited with helping Obama win over many women in 2008, told Politico in August: "I'm in his corner for whatever he needs me to do."

There already have been plenty of celebrities hosting or showing up at Obama fundraising events. Actress Eva Longoria hosted one at the home of Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas. Lady Gaga attended a September fundraiser at the home of Facebook's chief operating officer, Sheryl Sandberg. Alicia Keys performed at a New York fundraiser.

Over the summer, film executive Harvey Weinstein held a Manhattan event sprinkled with celebrities including Keys, Jimmy Fallon, and Gwyneth Paltrow and husband Chris Martin. A 50th birthday-themed fundraiser in Chicago featured performances by Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and the band OK Go.

Of course, celebrity support isn't always a win-win for a candidate. Just as Obama's opponents in 2008 tried to use his taste for arugula to paint him as elitist, they tried to use his celebrity connections to imply he was lightweight, all pizazz and no substance ? most pointedly in an ad tenuously linking him to Paris Hilton and Britney Spears.

The tactic seemed to scare Obama's campaign enough to play down the role of celebrities at the Democratic convention that summer. Will the campaign similarly seek to downplay the celebrity role this time?

"Celebrities are helpful in terms of exciting a base," says Griffin, the fundraiser. "I don't think the president will have any shortage of surrogates."

One thing is clear: They won't include Damon, and the president wasn't shy about making a few jokes at the actor's expense back in May, at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

"Matt Damon said he was disappointed in my performance," the president noted. Then he referred to one of Damon's recent films. "Well, Matt, I just saw `The Adjustment Bureau,' so right back atcha, buddy."

Damon, whose representatives did not respond to a request for comment, has given no sign that he plans to do anything as dramatic as switch sides in November. The real danger, say some Obama supporters, is that comments like his would lead voters, especially younger ones, to stay home.

That's a threat the president faces in places well beyond Hollywood.

Ken Sunshine, a prominent public relations consultant who has represented entertainers and politicians, thinks that ultimately "the activist community in entertainment and everywhere else will come home and support the president's re-election with the same degree of enthusiasm as before ? if for no other reason than ... consider the alternative!"

"But once we help him get re-elected," Sunshine adds, "then we really hold his feet to the fire in the second term."

George F. Kennan: An American Life

John Lewis Gaddis's biography is an important examination of a man who shaped the current American way of life.

If there were one word to encapsulate the life of George Frost Kennan, it would be ?conflicted.? Starting with his youth in Milwaukee in the first decades of the 20th century, and throughout a career that stretched from a foreign service position with the Coolidge administration, on through to the latter years of the Reagan presidency (when the president, as biographer John Lewis Gaddis laments, ?had little need of Kennan"), Kennan was often conflicted in his world view, though indeed ahead of his time ? in his thoughts, actions, and policy positions.

Gaddis, a Cold War scholar at Yale University and prize-winning author of several books on the subject, has provided an important, if not indispensable biography of Kennan in George F. Kennan: An American Life. Kennan was a figure alternately admired and reviled, but he was nonetheless an influential foreign serviceman, ambassador to both Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union, and a foreign policy strategist. In this context, it is not an overstatement to say that Kennan ? through the formulation of his Cold War ?Containment? strategy, his role as an architect of the post-World War II ?Marshall Plan?, and his passionate opposition to ?McCarthyism? ? was a central figure of the 20th century who alternately mirrored and molded our modern American way of life.

Gaddis?s account is refreshing in the sense that his interpretation of Kennan, his personality and beliefs, and his writings, is seemingly free of the ideological taint, sophistry, and hagiography that has so invaded political discussion in this early part of the new millennium. It is a very frank and open account. Gaddis undertook this project 30 years ago at the request of Kennan himself, with the provision that it not be published until after his passing. Within this tome?s nearly 1,000 pages, Gaddis has provided an extraordinary portrait of Kennan, which includes not only a wide range of Kennan?s views on political topics, but also throws light on his internal struggles and confessions about such deeply personal topics as morality and mortality, sex, loneliness, depression, and many others. Kennan does not hold back and Gaddis is both very faithful and fair to his subject.

In the earlier pages, Gaddis speaks about his methodology and his own philosophy about writing biography. In one instance, Gaddis discusses views of Kennan that could be viewed today as anti-Semitic. ?Biographers have an obligation ? to place their subjects within the period in which they lived: it is unfair to condemn them for not knowing what no one at the time could have known.? That sense of obligation extends to other characterizations of Kennan as well. Although Gaddis notes instances of solipsism and self-indulgence ? seasoned with occasional histrionics ? in Kennan's writing, Gaddis also makes clear that Kennan was likewise possessed of a powerful intellect, disciplined rectitude, and a remarkable prescience that produced, among other documents, the so-called? ?Long Telegram? ? a dispatch Kennan sent to soon-to-be US Atomic Energy Chairman David E. Lilienthal from Moscow in March of 1946. This was the single most important document that formulated America?s post-war Cold War policy toward the Soviet Union.
