Egypt president-elect to be sworn in Saturday

CAIRO ? Egypt's official news agency says the newly elected Islamist president will be sworn in Saturday before a high court.

Traditionally the president is sworn in before parliament, but the legislature was dissolved by order of the Supreme Constitutional Court, which invalidated parliamentary elections.

Therefore, Mohammed Morsi will be sworn in by that court, which features judges appointed by ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

The official MENA news agency on Thursday quoted court vice president Maher Sami as saying Morsi would be sworn in before the body's 18 judges.

Morsi ran for president as the candidate of the Muslim Brotherhood, which dominated the dissolved parliament and pressed for the house to be reinstated to swear him in.

Morsi was declared winner of the runoff election on Sunday.

Facebook prepping faster iPhone app using Objective-C code

Attention iPhone-toting Facebook?fiends, you'll soon be able to check out your friends' wedding photos and stalk your ex-partners more efficiently, as the social network's iOS app is about to get a significant speed boost, according to a new report.

The New York Times, citing two unnamed Facebook engineers, reported that Facebook is completely revamping its iOS application to optimise speed. The latest version of the app is being tested by Facebook developers and is expected to be released next month.

But don't get too excited that the new app will have any cool new features. It'll look exactly like the old one ? but will just work faster.

"I had the opportunity to see the as-yet unreleased iPhone application, and it is fast. Blazing fast," Nick Bilton, New York Times technology columnist, wrote in the report.

The new app will be quicker because it has been built primarily using a coding language called Objective-C, which is also used to build many other iOS apps. In contrast, the existing Facebook app uses Objective-C for its shell while many of its components are built using HTML5. The current approach is essentially like "putting the engine of a Smart Car in the body of a Ferrari," the newspaper noted.

Applications built predominantly using HTML5 pull images and content from the web into the application. Objective-C, on the other hand, is speedier because it has to collect less information from the web.

Facebook initially chose to build its apps using HTML5 so it could reuse the code across multiple platforms. This approach made it easier for developers, but sometimes caused the app to load at a snail's pace, to the chagrin of users.

Meanwhile, Facebook on Wednesday rolled out a new Open Graph feature to let users follow stories people post within Facebook applications. Users will be able to get these updates on their news feed without having to add a person as their friend or subscribe to their full feed.

"For example, a person can follow their favourite restaurant critic from within a food review app on Facebook," Yariv Sadan, software engineer at Facebook, wrote in a post on his?site's?blog. "Content a person publishes within your app will be displayed in the follower's News Feed even if they aren't Facebook friends."

Google releases Chrome browser for iPhone, iPad

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google's Chrome browser can now be used to surf the Web on the iPhone and iPad.

The Chrome application released Thursday is the latest volley in the escalating rivalry between Google and Apple, the maker of the popular mobile devices.

Google's attempt to supplant Apple Inc.'s own Safari browser comes a day after it unveiled its plans to sell a low-priced tablet computer to compete against the iPad and Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire.

The arrival of Chrome on Apple's mobile operating system comes a month after Yahoo Inc. released a browser called Axis for the iPhone and iPad.

Chrome, though, is already dueling with Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer for the bragging rights as the world's most popular browser.

Google Inc. revealed Thursday that Chrome now has 310 million active users.

Greece outlines issues it wants renegotiated

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's new coalition government said Saturday it will seek to repeal some taxes, halt layoffs and extend by two years the deadlines for tough austerity measures imposed under its international bailout agreement.

The policy statement issued by the three-party coalition came as the country's new prime minister, Antonis Samaras, successfully underwent eye surgery and his finance minister, Vassilis Rapanos, remained hospitalized after collapsing Friday.

"The general aim is no more cuts to salaries and pensions, no more taxes," the statement said, adding the government would not carry out any public sector layoffs.

Greece has been dependent since May 2010 on funds from two international rescue loan deals with other European Union countries and the International Monetary Fund, in return for which it imposed a series of deep spending cuts and tax hikes. Its most recent austerity program runs to mid-2014.

Whether the new government can deliver on its renegotiating pledges will depend on how they are viewed by their international creditors. Germany, the largest single contributor to Greece's bailout, has repeatedly said Athens must stick to its austerity targets.

Debt inspectors from the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF are due to return to Athens on Monday to review the country's fiscal situation and resume talks that had been put on hold during the country's nearly two-month political deadlock.

Samaras, whose conservative New Democracy party came first in June 17 elections but did not win enough votes to govern alone, heads a government that includes his party's long-time socialist rivals, PASOK, and the small Democratic Left party.

The creation of a government following two inconclusive national elections ended weeks of political uncertainty that had led to fears of Greece being forced out of Europe's joint currency. Such an event could have dragged down other financially troubled European countries along with the continent's economy.

While pledging to stick to the country's bailout deal, all three parties had said they would seek to renegotiate certain terms of the loan agreement.

Greece is mired in the fifth year of a deep recession and has seen unemployment spiral to above 22 percent. Widespread anger with rapidly falling living standards led to a massive increase in support for anti-bailout parties in the last two elections.

The new government will aim to extend by at least two years the deadlines for it to impose tough fiscal reforms "to support demand, development (and) employment," it said.

"This way the final fiscal target can be achieved without further cuts to salaries and pensions or the public investment program, but through curbing waste and the targeted fighting of corruption, tax evasion" and the black economy.

The statement said it would seek to reduce consumer tax on the restaurant industry and for agriculture, and extend one-year unemployment benefits by another year. It will also seek to extend unemployment benefits to the self-employed who have lost their businesses, and gradually increase the tax-free income limit to European averages.

The new coalition government said it would seek to restore collective wage agreements "to the level defined by European social law" and review cuts to the minimum wage, which had been slashed by 22 percent earlier this year to about ?580 ($727) a month as part of negotiations for Greece's second bailout package.

The government will also aim to replace the numerous property taxes currently in place with a single tax.

It will take "emergency measures" ? which it did not detail ? to restore the supply of medication to hospitals, it said, while also continuing to cut pharmaceutical and hospital spending.

In shutting down state organizations, one of the terms of its loan agreement, "the aim is not to have layoffs of permanent staff, but to have serious savings from non-salary operational costs and a reduction of bureaucracy."

The policy statement was issued shortly after Samaras underwent surgery to repair a detached retina. The hospital said the operation was carried out under full anesthesia and that the prime minister was recovering well.

"We're very satisfied with the outcome of the surgery, and I consider that although we had to deal with a truly difficult detachment of the retina, everything went as hoped for," said Panagiotis Theodosiadis, the doctor who treated Samaras.

He said the prime minister might remain hospitalized until Monday, although that would be determined over the next day.

Theodosiadis said he would know on Sunday whether Samaras would be able to fly to Brussels next week. The new prime minister faces the first test of his pledges to renegotiate some of the bailout terms at a European Union summit in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

Separately, Rapanos, the newly appointed finance minister, was still being treated in a private hospital after being rushed there Friday complaining of nausea, intense abdominal pain, dizziness and weakness.

A hospital statement Saturday said Rapanos had been undergoing tests, the results of which were "very satisfactory," and that his condition was "stable and improving."

It did not say what he was suffering from, or give any further details on his condition, other than to say his treatment would continue. It was unclear how long he would remain hospitalized.

Rapanos, who was named to the post Thursday, has not been sworn in to office yet. That ceremony had been scheduled for Friday evening, but was postponed due to his illness.

Skyline LB Peyton Pelluer commits to Washington State

When Peyton Pelluer was weighing his college options, the linebacker at Skyline saw a lot he liked at Washington State.

He felt comfortable in Pullman. He built a strong relationship with the coaching staff. He found plenty of potential in the program.

So, he thought to himself, "Why not get another Coug in the household?" and decided to give Mike Leach and his staff a verbal commitment Monday.

"I felt super comfortable there," said Pelluer, who also had Pac-12 offers from Arizona State and Colorado. "I felt comfortable around the coaches, they're awesome and I built a strong relationship with them. That was key in my decision. But, really, I saw a lot of potential in the program. They need a lot of players to come in there and help the program get back to its old glory."

The 6-foot-2, 225-pound All-State standout -- he had 122 solo tackles as a junior last season -- will follow in the footsteps of his father, Scott, who was a four-year starter at outside linebacker during his playing career at Washington State.

Pelluer's decision to play in Pullman creates a friendly family rivalry, considering his older brother, Cooper, is a linebacker at Washington.

"We were just out to dinner last night and we were already getting at it," said Pelluer, who told his family Sunday night. "It's going to be fun, especially if we meet each other on the field, which would be amazing."

Pelluer joins Eastside Catholic defensive back Markell Sanders, who committed Sunday, and Wenatchee lineman Cody O'Connell as the three in-state recruits the Cougars have landed so far.

"I've totally seen that their key is in-state guys," Pelluer said. "It's definitely cool that they like the local talent."

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Rival Greek party leaders were locked in a second day of power-sharing talks on Tuesday, with two potential minority partners voicing hope that a pro-bailout coalition government can be quickly formed after the debt-crippled country's second inconclusive election in six weeks.

At the core of any administration will be Antonis Samaras' New Democracy party, which came first in Sunday's vote and won 129 of Parliament's 300 seats ? but not enough to govern alone.

Samaras is seeking an alliance with the third-placed Socialist PASOK and the smaller Democratic Left party, which would broadly fulfill Greece's pledges to its bailout creditors for further cutbacks and reforms, keeping the country within Europe's joint currency. Otherwise, Greece would run out of cash and the continent could plunge deeper into a financial nightmare with global repercussions.

PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos met Tuesday with Democratic Left head Fotis Kouvelis, who told reporters afterward that a three-party deal could potentially be achieved "within hours."

Kouvelis said parties first had to agree on a policy platform, and on who would be appointed to the cabinet.

"I believe the process is gathering speed, the country must have a government ... and in the next hours, if there is an agreement ... it will be possible for us to proceed," he said. Kouvelis insisted that parts of Greece's harsh austerity program must be revised, saying the country "has been pulverized by pitiless measures."

Venizelos, who has pressed for an agreement by Tuesday night, said he was optimistic a deal could be reached.

"I am confident after my meeting with Mr Kouvelis, our views are very close," he said. "Greece must ? and will ? have a government as soon as possible. We agreed that the necessary processes must be accelerated."

Both the conservatives and PASOK have pledged to respect the commitments for further austerity and reforms that Greece undertook as conditions for two massive international bailouts since May 2010. They are pressing for an extension of at least two years in the deadline, which would alleviate the immediate impact of new cutbacks and is seen as a likely concession by creditors.

The Democratic Left is anti-austerity in principle, but wavering.

The second-placed, anti-bailout Syriza radical left party has refused to join in a coalition. Party leader Alexis Tsipras campaigned on a strong anti-bailout ticket, vowing to scrap the country's pledges and play tough with creditors ? Greece's European partners and the International Monetary Fund. His message resonated strongly with an austerity-weary electorate, which propelled Syriza from 4.6 percent in 2009 to nearly 27 percent and gave anti-austerity parties more than 50 percent in total.

In order to pass most laws, a government needs a simple majority of 151 seats. But to have any chance of success, it would require considerably more than that, especially amid the social turmoil of the past two-and-a-half years of harsh austerity in Greece.

Together with PASOK and the Democratic Left, Samaras' party would have 179 legislators, enjoying a strong majority of 28 seats.

Hopes that a deal can be struck boosted Greek share prices, with the battered Athens stock exchange gaining 2.2 percent in early midday trading.

Greece's short-term borrowing costs declined slightly on Tuesday, with the interest for a new 13-week treasury bill issue reaching 4.31 percent, down from 4.34 percent last month.

The total sum raised was ?1.3 billion ($1.64 billion), with the auction 2.2 times oversubscribed.

Samaras' three-day mandate to form a government expires on Wednesday. If it fails, Syriza would get a chance to form a government, followed by the Socialists. But Tsipras has said he will not even try to create a government. Venizelos has advocated circumventing the mandate process and proceeding straight to a meeting of party leaders under President Karolos Papoulias.

Venizelos has insisted that Syriza should participate in any coalition government, in what appears more an attempt to show the left-wing party up as intransigent rather than a realistic effort to drag it into governance.

Setting apart their bitter rivalry stemming from four decades of what was effectively a two-party system, New Democracy and PASOK took part in a brief coalition government earlier this year.

British PM says Putin no longer backs Syria's Assad

LOS CABOS, Mexico/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Britain's prime minister said on Tuesday Russian President Vladimir Putin has made it clear at the G20 summit in Mexico he wants President Bashar al-Assad out of power in Syria, but Putin indicated that Syrians should decide if Assad stays and Assad's forces bombarded the city of Homs and clashed with rebels.

Russia has been the staunchest backer of Assad and his military crackdown against militants and protesters in Syria, including supplying arms to the Syrian government.

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Putin had shifted his view of the Syrian leader during talks with U.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders at the Group of 20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, and that discussions were now focused on a transition of power in Syria.

"There remain differences over sequencing and the shape of how the transition takes place but it is welcome that President Putin has been explicit that he does not want Assad remaining in charge in Syria," Cameron told reporters.

"What we need next is an agreement on a transitional leadership which can move Syria to a democratic future that protects the rights of all its communities," Cameron added.

But Putin said at his own news conference at close of G20 summit: "I feel like I have to repeat our position. We believe that nobody has the right to decide for other nations who should be brought to power, who should be removed from power."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Labrov said Cameron's statement that Putin does not want Assad to remain in power "does not correspond to reality."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Cameron were present with Obama for the talks with Putin.

The chief U.N. monitor for Syria told the Security Council that his military observers were repeatedly targeted by hostile crowds and gunfire at close range last week before his decision to suspend operations, U.N. diplomats said.

Separately, a cargo ship off the British coast carrying weapons bound for Syria has apparently turned back towards Russia, Britain's Foreign Secretary said, calling again for a halt to arms shipments to Assad.

The Curacao-flagged cargo ship Alaed, last seen off the north-west coast of Scotland this week, was believed to carrying Russian weaponry to Syria, according to an insurer that said it had withdrawn coverage for the vessel.

The Pentagon said Russia's military was preparing to send three ships to Syria but noted that Moscow's stated intention was to send supplies and personnel to its naval facility in the Mediterranean port of Tartus.

Alarmed but apparently impotent to resolve the crisis, the outside world is deeply divided in its response to an increasingly sectarian conflict that threatens to become a proxy war for regional powers.

The United Nations estimates more than 10,000 people have been killed in 15 months of violence and unrest.

Western nations and their Sunni Muslim allies in the Gulf and Turkey seek Assad's overthrow but are wary of intervention, while Russia, China and Shi'ite Iran - Assad's strategic ally - have protected Assad from a tough international response.

SOUNDS OF EXPLOSIONS

A resident in Homs said the sound of explosions could be heard across the city, and activists also reported shelling in the Damascus suburb of Douma and fighting between soldiers and rebels in northern Aleppo province near the border with Turkey.

The violence is the latest wave of relentless bloodshed that led United Nations observers - who were sent to Syria to monitor a ceasefire deal brokered by international mediator Kofi Annan - to halt operations on Saturday.

General Robert Mood of Norway, chief U.N. monitor for Syria, told the 15-nation Security Council behind closed doors that his 300-strong unarmed observer force was targeted with gunfire or by hostile crowds at least 10 times last week, U.N. diplomats present at the meeting told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mood said that "indirect fire" incidents in which gunfire struck within 300-400 meters (yards) of observers occurred on a daily basis, envoys said. Last week, nine vehicles of the observer mission, known as UNSMIS, were struck or damaged, they added.

One diplomat said Mood spoke of "several hundred indirect fire incidents."

Last week U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous said that after 15 months of fighting Syria was now in the throes of a full-scale civil war. Ladsous also addressed the council and emphasized that the situation on the ground was too dangerous to allow the monitors to conduct normal patrols.

Some Western diplomats have suggested that there was little point in having UNSMIS remain in Syria when Assad's government has not only ignored Annan's peace plan but has stepped up its military assaults to seize rebel-held territory.

UNSMIS' 90-day mandate expires on July 21 and it is unclear whether the council will extend it.

Russia and Syria denied an Iranian media report that Syria would host Russian, Chinese and Iranian military forces for joint exercises. Iranian news agency Fars said 90,000 troops and hundreds of ships, tanks and warplanes from the four countries would take part in the war games on land and sea in Syria soon.

Activists say at least 2,000 people have been killed in Syria since Annan's April 12 ceasefire deal, intended to be the first stage in a political plan to resolve Syria's 15-month-old crisis, was supposed to put an end to the killing.

"There are many buildings and houses completely destroyed (in Homs), and many injuries in the field hospitals which need surgery," said one resident of Syria's third biggest city, who gave his name as Nidal.

"There are many martyrs and no medicine."

Syria said on Tuesday it had tried to make arrangements through the U.N. monitors for evacuations from Homs and blamed rebel fighters for obstructing those efforts and accused them of using civilians as human shields.

But Nidal blamed security forces, who he said opened fire on a Red Crescent vehicle as it tried to ferry people out of the center of the city.

Activists said violence flared across the country on Tuesday and state media said rebels blew up two oil pipelines.

SANA news agency said an "armed terrorist group" attacked a oil derivatives pipeline linking Homs and Damascus in the Sultaniya area of southern Homs, causing a fire and heavy smoke that residents said was visible from the centre of the city.

A crude oil pipeline in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor was also blown up. SANA quoted an oil ministry source as saying pumping was expected to resume in the next few days, adding that the same pipeline had been targeted twice in the last two weeks.

Sony announces the development of the 'Spectral' cell analyzer prototype

Sony Corporation today announced the development of ?Spectral? cell analyzer, its second ?flow cytometer? cell analysis instrument for the optical analysis of cells. Sony will also exhibit its prototype at ISAC (the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry) in Leipzig, Germany, from June 23 - 27.

This high-end cell analyzer adopts a newly-developed ?spectral? cytometry method to detect full spectrum fluorescent emissions, making highly complex analysis a simple task. By introducing this method, Sony aims to propose a novel method of cell analysis to researchers in advanced research fields such as immunology, oncology, and regenerative medicine.

?Flow cytometer? cell analysis instrument

The flow cytometer is a cell analysis instrument that applies optical measurements to analyze and sort various kinds of cells based on their size, number, exterior surface, and interior content (such as their structure, function, and biomarkers).

There are two types of flow cytometers: ?cell analyzers? exclusively for analyzing cells, and ?cell sorters? for both analyzing and sorting cells. Both types of flow cytometers are used by university laboratories, research institutes, and pharmaceutical companies in studies involving immunology and oncology, as well as research for regenerative medicine and stem cells, such as iPS (induced pluripotent stem) and ES (embryonic stem) cells. Flow cytometers are expected to further proliferate as research in these and other clinical areas continues to expand.

?Spectral? cell analyzer

The main features of Sony?s cell analyzer

Conventional cell analyzers analyze characteristics of cells by staining cells with a reagent (known as a fluorophore) that becomes fluorescent under certain conditions, and then detecting the light (fluorescence) emitted from cells when they are hit by a laser beam (known as fluorescence detection). This methodology allows researchers to analyze the size, internal structure, and surface structure of tens of thousands of cells per second.

In order to detect fluorescence, conventional cell analyzers use optical filters to divide the fluorophores based on the fluorescence wavelength range (channel), which enables isolated measurement of only an intensity of fluorescence. Therefore, in order to detect multiple colors a corresponding number of optical filters, detectors, and fluorophores are required.

However, by this method, multiple fluorophores can overlap in a single channel (Figure 1), leading to additional spectral compensation or correction work. Consequently, the increase in the number of fluorescent reagents has posed various problems in analysis accuracy, reproducibility, and workefficiency.

The ?Spectral? cell analyzer developed by Sony adopts a new method to measure the full spectrum of fluorescence with a high degree of accuracy. This is achieved by dividing the fluorescence emissions of all the fluorophores with Sony?s uniquely designed prism array, in combination with a newly-developed ?32-channel photomultiplier tube? (Figure 2). As such, the spectral analyzer technology enables the analysis of the spectral emissions of virtually any overlapped fluorophores by dividing them into individual fluorophore emissions with Sony?s independently developed analysis algorithm. This approach eliminates the need for spectral compensation required on other systems and expands the total number of fluorophores that can be analyzed simultaneously. The spectral analyzer provides rapid analysis of highly complex fluorescence emissions with high accuracy and reproducibility.

Furthermore, this method can detect the weak intrinsic fluorescence from unstained cells (autofluorescence) with a high degree of accuracy, revealing the detailed shape of its entire waveform. Thus, this instrument is ideal for analyzing unstained cells or cells that are very sensitive to staining.

Sony aims to achieve mid- to long-term growth in its medical business, and will strive to expand and strengthen its range of flow cytometers to deliver high-quality, innovative products.

Firefighters stage concert for tornado victims

INDIANAPOLIS ? "With most of us being firefighters, we're very much built into the mindset of you see a need and respond to that."

So says Jeff Owens of the Indianapolis Fire Department. Together with other area firefighters, he organized the "Concert of Hope" on Saturday to help victims of the tornadoes that struck Southern Indiana in March.

The concert, which was conducted on the football field at Ben Davis High School, featured 10 local artists, including Owens. It also included several food vendors.

Joy Lorch of the Wayne Township Fire Department got the ball rolling. She met with some of the families in Henryville who took a direct hit from the tornadoes.

"I left there on fire," Lorch said. "I called (Owens immediately after) and told him the situation. Unfortunately people in Indianapolis are so far removed that they don't understand there are still people sleeping in tents."

Indeed, the cleanup in Henryville and the other towns hit by the twisters may be done, but the rebuilding is far from complete. Many homeowners have insurance, but the coverage doesn't extend to the businesses they had on their properties. Some have lost their only income source. Many others can't get their insurance money until they bring their septic systems up to code, which can cost upwards of $20,000.

"It would be easy for me to sit in my backyard with a cold drink and think everything's right in the world, because mine really hasn't changed," Owens said. "But they're only an hour and a half away from me, and their world is completely different. It's a third world country now."

The firefighters spent eight weeks planning the Concert of Hope.

"There were people who said they didn't think we could pull it off in this amount of time, but we were determined to because there was a need," Owens said. "It couldn't wait."

That's precisely the reason why he and his fellow firefighters were more than willing to give up some of their free time, including a whole Saturday, to help with this cause.

"I have to spend one day in the heat," Owens said. "They're spending every day and night in tents or with tarps over their roofs. Some don't have anything. Seems like one day in the heat and a few hours here and there planning the event are relatively minor compared to what they're dealing with."

Proceeds from the concert went to New Washington State Bank in Henryville, which has established a 501(c)3 account for tornado victims.

Organizers also used the occasion to honor some of the heroes from the tragedy. The assistant state fire marshal presented a medal of valor to the Monroe Township Fire Department. They shielded a woman alongside Interstate 65 from large hail, suffering broken bones in the process.

The Concert of Hope isn't the end of this group's efforts in helping the tornado victims.

"Until they're taken care of, I don't think we're going to be at peace," Lorch said. "We're going to keep going even after this day is over. We're not done."

Just as important, Owens adds, is showing them that people are still concerned.

"They haven't been forgotten," he said. "Our worlds may be dramatically different, but we still care about what's going on down there."

WWDC days four and five

On the fourth day of WWDC, Rene, Seth, and I went full out at Moscone Center, talking with developers (you'll see the video soon), meeting up with Mark Gurman and some other bloggers, and joining AgileBits, Ecamm, Jake Behrens, and Merlin Mann for dinner. Engineers perfecting carbon nanotubes for highly energy-efficient computing

ScienceDaily (June 14, 2012) ? Energy efficiency is the most significant challenge standing in the way of continued miniaturization of electronic systems, and miniaturization is the principal driver of the semiconductor industry. "As we approach the ultimate limits of Moore's Law, however, silicon will have to be replaced in order to miniaturize further," said Jeffrey Bokor, deputy director for science at the Molecular Foundry at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Professor at UC-Berkeley.

To this end, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a significant departure from traditional silicon technologies and a very promising path to solving the challenge of energy efficiency. CNTs are cylindrical nanostructures of carbon with exceptional electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. Nanotube circuits could provide a ten-times improvement in energy efficiency over silicon.

Early promise

When the first rudimentary nanotube transistors were demonstrated in 1998, researchers imagined a new age of highly efficient, advanced computing electronics. That promise, however, is yet to be realized due to substantial material imperfections inherent to nanotubes that left engineers wondering whether CNTs would ever prove viable.

Over the last few years, a team of Stanford engineering professors, doctoral students, undergraduates, and high-school interns, led by Professors Subhasish Mitra and H.-S. Philip Wong, took on the challenge and has produced a series of breakthroughs that represent the most advanced computing and storage elements yet created using CNTs.

These high-quality, robust nanotube circuits are immune to the stubborn and crippling material flaws that have stumped researchers for over a decade, a difficult hurdle that has prevented the wider adoption of nanotube circuits in industry. The advance represents a major milestone toward Very-large Scale Integrated (VLSI) systems based on nanotubes.

"The first CNTs wowed the research community with their exceptional electrical, thermal and mechanical properties over a decade ago, but this recent work at Stanford has provided the first glimpse of their viability to complement silicon CMOS transistors," said Larry Pileggi, Tanoto Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and director of the Focus Center Research Program Center for Circuit and System Solutions.

Major barriers

While there have been significant accomplishments in CNT circuits over the years, they have come mostly at the single-nanotube level. At least two major barriers remain before CNTs can be harnessed into technologies of practical impact: First, "perfect" alignment of nanotubes has proved all but impossible to achieve, introducing detrimental stray conducting paths and faulty functionality into the circuits; second, the presence of metallic CNTs (as opposed to more desirable semiconducting CNTs) in the circuits leads to short circuits, excessive power leakage and susceptibility to noise. No CNT synthesis technique has yet produced exclusively semiconducting nanotubes.

"Carbon nanotube transistors are attractive for many reasons as a basis for dense, energy efficient integrated circuits in the future. But, being borne out of chemistry, they come with unique challenges as we try to adapt them into microelectronics for the first time. Chief among them is variability in their placement and their electrical properties. The Stanford work, that looks at designing circuits taking into consideration such variability, is therefore an extremely important step in the right direction," Supratik Guha, Director of the Physical Sciences Department at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center .

"This is very interesting and creative work. While there are many difficult challenges ahead, the work of Wong and Mitra makes good progress at solving some of these challenges," added Bokor.

Realizing that better processes alone will never overcome these imperfections, the Stanford engineers managed to circumvent the barriers using a unique imperfection-immune design paradigm to produce the first-ever full-wafer-scale digital logic structures that are unaffected by misaligned and mis-positioned CNTs. Additionally, they addressed the challenges of metallic CNTs with the invention of a technique to remove these undesirable elements from their circuits.

Striking features

The Stanford design approach has two striking features in that it sacrifices virtually none of CNTs' energy efficiency and it is also compatible with existing fabrication methods and infrastructure, pushing the technology a significant step toward commercialization.

"This transformative research is made all the more promising by the fact that it can co-exist with today's mainstream silicon technologies, and leverage today's manufacturing and system design infrastructure, providing the critical feature of economic viability," said Betsy Weitzman of the Focus Center Research Program at the Semiconductor Research Corporation

The engineers next demonstrated the possibilities of their techniques by creating the essential components of digital integrated systems: arithmetic circuits and sequential storage, as well as the first monolithic three-dimensional integrated circuits with extreme levels of integration.

The Stanford team's work was featured recently as an invited paper at the International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) as well as a "keynote paper" in the IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems.

"Many researchers assumed that the way to live with imperfections in CNT manufacturing was through expensive fault-tolerance techniques. Through clever insights, Mitra and Wong have shown otherwise. Their inexpensive and practical methods can significantly improve CNT circuit robustness, and go a long way toward making CNT circuits viable," said Sachin S. Sapatnekar, Editor-in-Chief, IEEE Transactions on CAD. "I anticipate high reader interest in the paper," Sapatnekar noted.

The six-year extension creates an eight-year deal that amounts to, in reality, a four-year deal with a series of four one-year team options thereafter.

Gronkowski replaces the $1.23 million he was due to earn over the final two years of his rookie contract with the same base salaries and workout bonuses in 2012 and 2013, plus a signing bonus of $8 million, fully-guaranteed compensation of $4 million in 2014, and $5 million in 2015 pay that is guaranteed for injury only for now, and that becomes fully guaranteed if he?s on the roster five days after the Super Bowl that ends the 2014 season.

After the fourth year, the Pats have to decide whether to pay Gronkowski an option bonus of $10 million, which the team has to decide whether to exercise by the end of the 2015 league year.? As Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal pointed out on Friday, the Pats have agreed not to pass on the option and then use the franchise or transition tag to keep him around for another season at what likely would be a much lower figure than $10 million.

So Gronkowski either will become an unrestricted free agent after four seasons, or he?ll get $10 million plus $2.25 million in base salary and a workout bonus of $250,000 and $31,250 for each game that he appears on the active roster, for a total possible haul in 2016 alone of $13 million.

The keys to the ultimate duration of the deal could be the cap numbers.? At very low figures of $2.66 million and $2.75 million in 2012 and 2013, respectively, the number moves to $5.4 million in 2014 and then to $8.65 million in 2015.

That makes Gronkowski a candidate for an extension or a restructuring in 2015, in order to drive the cap figure down.

Of course, that would serve only to increase the cap numbers of $6.65 million, $7 million, $11 million, and $12 million over the final four years of the contract, making the final two seasons at base salaries of $8 million and $9 million even less likely to ever be fulfilled.

Still, given that he was facing only $1.23 million over the next two seasons and up to two seasons thereafter of the tight end franchise tag, Gronkowski has emerged with a large bird in the hand, in lieu of two in a bush that he wouldn?t have gotten close enough to catch for at least two more years, maybe four.
