Precipitation impacts glacial melt, Patagonian Glacier study suggests

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? Glaciers play a vital role in Earth's climate system, and it's critical to understand what contributes to their fluctuation. Increased global temperatures are frequently viewed as the cause of glacial melt, but a new study of Patagonia's Gualas Glacier highlights the role of precipitation in the glacier's fluctuation.

The study, conducted by S?bastien Bertrand of Renard Centre of Marine Geology, Ghent University (Belgium) and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and his colleagues, reconstructs a 5,400 year-record of the region's glacial environment and climate, comparing past temperature and rainfall data with sediment records of glacier fluctuations and the historical observations of early Spanish explorers.

The study was published March 15 in the Open Access journal Climate of the Past.

As glaciers fluctuate, retreating or adding mass, they dramatically affect the water cycle -- locking up fresh water as they amass, causing the sea level to rise as they thaw and retreat.

"Improving our understanding of the impact of climate changes on glacier variability is one of the most pressing aspects of present-day climate research," says Bertrand, a postdoctoral fellow in WHOI's Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry department and the Renard Centre of Marine Geology, University of Ghent.

The focus of the work is Gualas Glacier, a 32-kilometer long shifting mountain of ice with an area of 119.2 square kilometers that sits above Golfo Elefantes. It is part of the Northern Patagonian Icefield (NPI), a series of 70 glaciers fed by precipitation that originates in the Pacific Ocean and falls in the rain belt west of the Andes, reaching levels of up to ten meters a year. The majority of the western NPI glaciers have retreated over the last 150 years.

"These glaciers are retreating as a response to global climate change, but not only because of increasing temperature, which is generally cited as the cause of worldwide glacier retreat," said Bertrand. "The fast retreat of Gualas, and other western NPI glaciers, during the last century, seems to be driven by a decrease in winter precipitation -- snow -- rather than by an increase in temperature."

The study constituted the first effort to use glaciomarine sediments -- sediments transported by glaciers or their meltwater to the marine environment -- from the fjords of Northern Chilean Patagonia to reconstruct Holocene glacier fluctuations, reaching back 5,400 years. After analyzing a sediment core gathered in the central basin of Golfo Elefantes during a 2005 cruise aboard the icebreaker Nathaniel B. Palmer, the scientists reckoned that over five millennia the glacier had seen three major periods of advance. Once this picture was assembled, it was compared with data on regional temperature and precipitation to determine which factor most impacted Gualas Glacier.

Two high resolution sea-surface temperature records were used as temperature indicators, and pollen records demonstrated precipitation levels. Examining these, the scientists discovered trends in the pollen/precipitation levels that corresponded to the fluctuations seen in the glacier, while the temperature levels were less influential, suggesting the glacier was mostly affected by precipitation.

In addition to the geological record, the study incorporates the observations of early Spanish explorers, beginning with Antonio de Vea in 1675. Spanish explorers documented their voyages to Patagonia, noting what they saw, and omitting what they didn't -- or couldn't -- see. Using the explorers' maps and descriptions of Patagonia's fjords, Bertrand and his colleagues pieced together the life-story of Gualas Glacier. Through studying these historical documents, the scientists determined that Gualas Glacier has retreated nine kilometers over the last 110 years, including 2.5 km during the last 25 years.

Although this study reveals the glaciers west of the Andes are controlled by precipitation, Bertrand says that glaciers on the eastern -- leeward -- flank of the icefield may be controlled by temperature.

"It needs to be tested if we are to understand and better predict the impact of global climate change on Patagonian glaciers," he said. He added that glaciers located in other maritime environments might also be driven by changes in precipitation rather than temperature.

The idea to use historical documents came from team member Fernando Torrej?n, an historian with the University of Concepci?n (Chile) who specializes in extracting climate and environmental information from written and iconographic documents. Bertrand recalls, "I knew his work on some Chilean glaciers, such as San Rafael, so I asked him to participate in this study to complement the results from the sediment cores."

Torrej?n plumbed the records of the 17th-century Spanish explorers archived at the library at the University of Concepci?n and the National Library of Chile, in Santiago. His contribution added an interesting historical component to the study and confirmed the interpretation of the geological/sediment record.

Of Millinery & Motherhood: A family holiday in Nerja.

March and time for a family holiday! We'd been saving for a well deserved break from the everyday and booked ourselves a 5 night stay in Nerja, Andalucia.

What a fantastic time we had! The weather was fantastic, temperatures of between 19 - 23 degrees, just nice with a?pleasant?sea breeze and not too warm overnight to be uncomfortable. The views in this unspoiled part of Spain were simply stunning and the old cobbled streets with white washed terraced homes were just beautiful.

Kaylee was well catered for almost everywhere we went, the only downside was the lack of?high-chairs?even in some family friendly establishments, however she weathered this by showing what a big girl she is becoming and sat on a grown up chair in most places! As for things to do, we all highly recommend the Nerja Donkey Sanctuary who do a fantastic job of looking after the Donkeys, Horses, Pigs, Sheep and Dogs in their care. We adopted Ginny and Ozzie, a Mum and her 5 day old baby!?

The land train was also a favourite for us, Kaylee loved being taken round the old streets waving to everyone who we passed. There was also no shortage of toddler friendly play areas dotted around the town!?

?I must also highly recommend the traditional 'Chocolate Y Churros', well worth the calories!!

I was very pleased to see lots of little shops with?independent?crafters?selling their wares instead of mass market tacky tourist trinkets!! Kaylee bought me a lovely bracelet from?jewellery?designer Isolda Navarro and I treated myself to a gorgeous little leather coin purse?sculpted?into the shape of a scallop shell!

A lovely place, and we'll certainly be going back some day!

Mo Lawal?s dismissal emphasizes need for Zuffa policy on Twitter

"King" Mo Lawal was cut from Strikeforce yesterday. He received a suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for a banned substance after his January win over Lorenz Larkin. Shortly after his hearing with the NAC, Lawal called a commissioner a racist b**** over Twitter. According to Strikeforce's Scott Coker, Lawal's reaction was to blame for the dismissal.

Calling a woman the b-word is wrong, no matter the circumstances, which is exactly what I told Lawal yesterday. He's been a friend of mine since long before either of us were involved in MMA, so I told him what I would tell any friend of mine. If you don't want it said about your mother, you shouldn't say it about any woman. Though I don't know if I influenced his decision, he deleted the tweet not long after.

What he tweeted was wrong, but he should not have lost his job, just like Miguel Torres should not have lost his job late last year. I didn't think Torres should have lost his job then, nor did I think Forrest Griffin should have lost his job over a tweet about rape, or Rashad Evans over his comment about child abuse, or Joe Rogan for calling me the c-word, or White for calling MMA reporter Loretta Hunt the b-word.

What every one of these cases called for is punitive action. Some combination of a reprimand, a fine that will benefit the aggrieved parties, a public apology, a suspension, and corrective action like sensitivity training would be more appropriate than being fired. The offender would be more likely to learn something from their offenses than if they suddenly have to look for a job, or if there had been little done about the offense.

The problem, once again, is that Zuffa has no policy on fighter (and commentator) behavior. A fighter doesn't know if he's crossed the line until he's crossed it. Fighters can't even learn from each other's actions because there is no consistency on how incidents are treated. Considering how White called Hunt the same word that Lawal to describe the commissioner and then never apologized for it (he only apologized for using a slur against homosexuals), how could Lawal know Zuffa would have a problem with it?

The UFC usually holds their fighters' summit in June. It's the end of March. They have a few months to formulate a policy that is clear and fair to fighters.

Little Brand Loyalty Among Home Improvement Shoppers | Seattle ...

Nearly seven out of 10 home improvement shoppers say they are not brand loyal when it comes to buying big-ticket items, according to The Complex Shopper, a study conducted by The Integer Group and Decision Analyst. The research also found that about 70 percent of window/door shoppers did not have any prior experience with the brand or company they ultimately picked when buying.

?Considering it may be three, five, even 10 years between purchases of home improvement items?ranging from flooring and gutters to kitchen cabinets and faucets?it?s not so surprising that shoppers turn to new brands when it?s time to replace or upgrade,? says Frank Maher, Integer COO and president of its Midwest office. ?However, home improvement brands can turn shoppers into loyal brand advocates by understanding their shopping behaviors and committing to long-term communication in between those purchases.?

In a report entitled ?Revealing the Motivations that Drive Home Improvement Shoppers,? Integer shares insights around home improvement categories in general, and in-depth findings in three categories: flooring, windows/doors and major appliances. Among its findings are that window/door and flooring shoppers spend the greatest amount of time researching?often by retail site and not brand?before in-store shopping.

The report identifies four shopper types?the Experience Lover, the Fretting Frugal, the Passive Purchase and the Social Adventurer?and reviews how they interact differently with home improvement brands. For instance, the relatively younger Social Adventurer segment is more apt to take action after purchase than other shopper types because of their social shopping behavior.? The research points out the potential these types have to become another medium to advertise a brand.?

?Understanding what your shoppers want and expect from you is the key to creating an ongoing relationship,? Maher says. ?Knowing who wants to engage with you, and how, will help brands develop successful communications and loyalty strategies that encourage their shoppers to become brand advocates.?

Throughout 2012, Integer plans to publish new facts and findings related to the study.? More information, including downloads or The Complex Shopper home improvement white paper, executive summary, infographic overview and related blog posts, is available at www.complexshopper.com.

Amid Plan To Revamp Philadelphia Property Assessments ...

(Philadelphia city finance director Rob Dubow, left, and Councilman Bill Green. Photo from City of Phila. TV)

By Mike Dunn

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) ? Mayor Nutter?s budget experts were in the hot seat today as Philadelphia City Council opened hearings on Nutter?s plan to revamp the way property assessments are calculated in the city.

One of the issues facing Council is that the new citywide reassessments are not yet complete.? And Rob Dubow, the mayor?s finance director, admitted not knowing with certainty the total of property taxes that would come in under the new system.

The mayor?s target is around $500 million to the city and more than that to the school district, but Councilman Bill Green said it could end up at least double that.

(Green:)? ?That is, a billion to a billion-four, compared to 491 million dollars.?
(Dubow:)? ?Again, we don?t know where its going to come out.? It could be more than that, it could be less than that.?

Councilman-at-large Jim Kenney wanted to know what to tell residents who fear a doubling of property taxes as the mayor?s plan is put into place:

?These are folks who aren?t needy when it comes to city services, and are paying $4,000 now and could potentially be paying $8,000 next year.? How do I keep them living here?? Kenney asked.? ?Why would they want to live here??

?We want to put smoothing and a homestead exemption in place to help with that sticker shock,? Dubow replied.

Dubow said the mayor will phase in any increases over three years, and hopes for state approval of homestead exemptions to ease any property tax hit to homeowners.

Kenney called for an outright cap on ?what we?re going to whack people with.?

Teaching Careers ? General Information | Foundations Of Education

Of course, a training program for teachers ?easy? once you are, but not so much the case when it comes to the application process.

What type of education as a teacher and currently a master?s student in education, I am constantly in contact with potential students an education, whether at school or post-secondary ? with students always ask what it takes to get to the top?short list to apply for a training program for teachers in Canada.?The following list contains some common questions from prospective students asked about a degree in education ? and of course my answer.?If you have questions or are unclear about some of the suggestions in this article, please drop by our site and find us in the forums!

Q # 1: What kind of course should I take before applying to an undergraduate program in education?

This all depends on your school and the programs you want (such as programs for Aboriginal students or ESL classes, etc. designed) within college of your choice.?Some universities require that you take only two years of Arts and Sciences (General Studies) before the application can accept, something straight out of high school, while others, if you had a three-year program before they would prefer to see?you as acceptance.

If you?re lucky, right out of high school (except that your average high school sits quite high and 70-75%) to have to check your volunteer and extracurricular experiences, your work will resume, and references? You choose to vouch for you when it comes to decision making time in your school.?Schools as students who strongly extracurricular in participating because they have a potential student who works hard and see you, ?give back? to see the university community (who make their program look good), and the jump?5 years on the way you look like a future coach sports clubs or interests as a teacher leader.

The notes are of course important for obvious reasons ? teachers need to teach good work and study habits, and of course takes a bit of general knowledge to make inquiries of students and teach courses in a plane.

Experience ? chances are, if you work throughout high school, the children or some kind of social dimension / job aids have held included ? you are a candidate for a program, ed.?You mean, camp counselor, facilitator, coach, lifeguard, etc. ? all jobs like these show that you have had previous success / interest / experience in dealing with your community and with children and you can be in a better position as a professional teacher,?the making as a career to be considered further asked.

References ? not a parent, unless you are an outlier colony and had no other child options.I, I joke.?But seriously ? sure, your list of references and letters of reference well-rounded.?Use past employers, teachers, principals, volunteer leader, or another community member to help you.?Most places require at least three of them, so I?d thought of five only if you have any more, somewhere in there.

If you go the route degree before applying to education ? the best choice would be to sit down to determine a student counselor at the University of your University of Education, their expectations of you, that you should have.?Her high school career / college counselor should also have a good grip on, but it is better to seek a second opinion just in case there is an imbalance of information as soon as you start your university career actually there.?It is worse to think that this is your ?last year before going into education!??.?and the achievement of your one or two classes from what should have been taken into account.?Boo to the polls.

Finally, if you take two to three years of general studies before use and do not necessarily try to make pre-ED?s degree, I also suggest seeing an academic advisor as soon as you begin your studies.?If you plan to directly inform the public education at all ages, always include security courses English, studio art (painting, drawing, etc. ? even if you suck, you can create a decent mark notes), Native Studies (take a few?of them ? teachers with Aboriginal history / culture are familiar desired), kinesiology, a natural science (Your Clock ?geography? of classes ? some universities do not accept human geography as a program of undergraduate education) ??But of course, check with your advisor that course availability and range of application from one province to province.

Q # 2: What types of courses you take each year in education?

As any professional will take your courses more and more interest than ever in your studies.?Ed as the first.?Student (a program of the year ed two or three) ? you will learn the basics ? teaching fundamentals (especially during class culture, consciousness and the diversity of students on the topics of cultural, ethical, etc.), you can in a?some classes of programs (courses, this program is, and maybe a few classes to play the demanding missions / practice education program) have to be introduced, and in some necessary decisions, which are only open to students of education.?The more you continue to have in your degree, you can choose whether you want to elementary / middle age / school and you can also have the opportunity to prepare for teaching in a religious school, study of this religion (one or two of course) as?option for your first cycle.?Foundations and later Ed courses curriculum education is just ?focused? versions, or object-based versions of what you will be introduced in your first year.?Expect some classes of Directors (the study of political and personal / political council) and special education classes (with a view to learning disabilities and gifted children, confronted with these types of learners in the class).

All in all, super easy, but he invested much time and commitment required for participation in the class, as it does not seem necessary.?The teacher will note the presence and if you are in good shape, can be to your advantage if you need a reference letter or conspicuous name-dropping to future employers.

Q # 3: Details of the internship?

Most people have relays teaching practice before making a placement ? whether it be days or weeks at a time to be, there is a small practice.?Do not be nervous (easier for me to say ?) ? but really.?Your cooperating teacher (the teacher whose class you would be able to ?practice teaching? in your course) and your manager are there to assist and support you as a student to learn to be teachers, not out to rip you off and you?attempt will fail.

There is a big debate about whether you need to prepare a large quantity for your internship or not.?Yep, if you know your level and to prepare or have a friend who?s a teacher to show you the ropes can over the summer period.?But if you are a teacher, etc. for the first time and who is not the slightest idea how to plan appropriate unit or long-term plan for your students, and effectively use the curriculum developed in your classroom in a certain way, etc..?.?do not care!?Your cooperation is also your mentor and teacher for some time, where you can reference to the class set-up, his / her teaching methods, students as learners, and then have talks with his your cooperating teacher about how to better do your job as?Trainee in all these factors in. Also, you have several options, other students and tutors meet to discuss their experiences and support for professional development days to learn about education (and yes, still teaching, even after receipt of this?to visit ? to be only in terms of education and trends)!.?In other words, do not specify placement expected to show your co-op or is severely criticized for not making your methods.?Instead, take each of your classes as a learning experience for the next and enjoy your growth as a professional teacher!?Makes it fun, make the most of it ? relax, work hard and use your college supervisor when to problems with your co-op teachers ? it is nothing but a great experience learning, should you excited about theOccupation!

During your course, spend as much time as possible to extra-curricular and cross-linking.?It is not only adds experience to your resume, but opens to a wide range of activities you can enjoy teaching and find that the biggest key ? networking.?There are so many possibilities that open up when you play in coaching, preparation, or a school concert, or key stakeholders involved in the school or municipality.?People see you doing great things, to spread the word, and voila ? you open the door to a steady flow of positive testimonials and a large number of people involved in the fields of education, well rounded.?Easy!

Q # 4: Job ?

It depends on your province / city.?Changes constantly with people retire.?Usually in big market is difficult for students, teachers to be to hang around and wait until the work tend.?Rural communities have more availability ? this can sometimes be good if you are willing to compromise position ? as a quick-start your career, you can help in an urban school division a little faster than a teacher, we hope that grinds like a?Penner for a job after college is waiting.?As an educated person, it is normal for a little picky.?Browse the school division and the websites of each school of interest to your visions and goals are matched your teaching philosophy can be??If you are anything less than the traditional hands on education and teaching, a Montessori school or one that revolves around Reggio Emilia philosophy of learning to be the best choice for you.?Instruction in the schools with these philosophies often include training on the training program for teachers, so shop around to place on their websites, a teacher training in your area.

Ultra Music Festival's 'Best Of Bass' Pre-Party: Smog Vs. Basshead

Miami's Mekka hosts 12th Planet, Pendulum, Drop the Lime and more.

MIAMI — Nestled in a series of rooms at Mekka downtown, Smog vs. Basshead, a party conceived by bass-music champions from L.A. and Miami, on Thursday night again realized a frenzied hands-in-the-air steamfest. For the third year in a row, hundreds of partygoers screamed their lungs out, pumping their arms to the warbles and drum and bass.

For all the talk of dubstep and drum and bass being mostly underground, judging by the event's attendance, the genre is booming — and pioneers like 12th Planet (born John Dadzie), a 13-year California bass veteran and Smog label head, couldn't be prouder.

"It started off as a party at the White Room, and Basshead is a label based out of Miami," 12th explained to MTV News after his set. "The label actually put out my first dubstep release, so we were kind of always rooted together, and we just decided to join forces because, being from California, it's hard to break into other markets.

"We got the opportunity to work in Miami, and the first show was a hit. And the second show, last year, was the biggest Smog vs. Basshead. And then this year, just as many people. So, I'm totally excited — totally stoked."

The world SVB creates bears a comparison to the large-scale EDM event taking place a few blocks away. While the bass get-together might not reach the scale of the Ultra Music Festival, a variety of artists gathered for a series of fiery performances, taking fans into daybreak.

"It's just five rooms of bass — straight up!" 12th proclaimed. SVB featured 16bit, Noah D, Flinch, Jaun Basshead and more. U.K. bass aggregator, feeder and video-sharing community UKF boasted a Pendulum DJ set, Zeds Dead and Kaon Sound. The Trouble & Bass room had Drop the Lime, AC Slater and Toddla T. The Metalheadz room was headlined by Goldie & Bailey.

"All these guys making great, great music. We even had Foreign Beggars come down," 12th said about his former tourmates, an electronic hip-hop collective that recently caught the eye of deadmau5. "They've never even played in Florida. I think that is the appeal of this party: You are going to hear the best of bass music."

Mom taught young chimp to blow raspberries!

Captive chimpanzees learn from their mothers to call out to humans, new research suggests. Those chimps raised by their moms were also most likely to use similar calls, from lip-smacking to blowing kisses.

This teaching from mother to child is an example of "social learning," which played an important role in the development of human culture and language.

While social learning of tool use has been seen in chimps before, "it has never really been shown for communication before," study researcher Jared Taglialatela, an assistant professor at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, told LiveScience. Before this study, he said, "social learning of communication signals was seen as unique to human language."

Vocal chimps
The learned vocalizations are called "attention-getting sounds," because they are used by the chimps to get the attention of their human caretakers, especially if the caretaker is in possession of food or a tool the chimp needs. The sounds include grunting, blowing kisses, smacking their lips, teeth chomping and blowing raspberries.

    1. Reality check on 'Hunger Games' technologies

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: The technological divide at the heart of "The Hunger Games" highlights real-life technologies that pose similar ethical issues, ranging from genetic engineering to crowd control.

    2. Bat has a nose only a mother could love
    3. Robotic jellyfish may never run out of energy
    4. Venice is still sinking ? and now it's tilting

Not all captive chimps make these calls, though researchers aren't sure why.

The researchers studied 158 chimps living in captivity at the University of Texas, MD Anderson Cancer Center. During multiple trials, the researcher stood 3 feet (1 meter) away from the chimps' enclosure for 30 seconds, with grapes in hand. The researcher either looked directly at the chimp or in another direction during the trials.

Some chimps produced calls to get the attention of the researcher, and possibly get their hands on some food, while some didn't. The researchers compared mothers and their offspring, to see if there were any patterns to the calls (or no calls).

Mommy and me
About half (73) of the chimps made some type of attention-getting noises. Of these, 59 were mother-reared, and 12 had been raised in the nursery by humans. Of the 59 mother-reared chimps that made calls, the majority of them made the same calls as their mothers. So if the mama chimp tended to use lip-smacking or grunting, the offspring were likely to do the same.

The researchers think social learning of communication like this may occur in both mother-offspring pairs as well as in groups of chimpanzee pals. The nursery-reared chimps may have learned their calls from their nursery peers.

"The sounds may not necessarily be just from mother, but also from your social group. But for a young one, their primary partner is their mother," Taglialatela said.

The findings, detailed in Wednesday's issue of the journal Biology Letters, have implications for understanding our common ancestors.

"You can now dial back to the common ancestor of human and chimps and it likely had at least some potential for socially learning communicative signals," Taglialatela said.

Humanity's Quest to Learn about Our Origins and Last Call for the Science in Action Award

Humans have a seemingly primal need to understand how we came to be the way we are today. Pieces of our ancient forebears generally are hard to come by, however. Scientists working to interpret our evolution often have had to make do with studying a fossil toe bone here or a jaw there. Now, in an amazing bounty, paleoanthropologist Lee Berger and his team have uncovered two well-preserved partial skeletons of Australopithecus sediba that date from nearly two million years ago at a site near Johannes?burg, South ?Africa; the specimens include bones from every region of the body. The bones of at least four other individuals have also been found.

Already those first two A. sediba skel?etons suggest we may have to revise a lot of what we thought was true about early human history. If Berger?s interpretation of the bones is correct, some branches of our family tree may need to be redrawn. Senior editor Kate Wong visited the site with Berger to learn more. This month?s cover story, ?First of Our Kind.?

Turning to the state of our species today, we offer a special report on polio. Worldwide confirmed cases of the disease, which once crippled hundreds of thousands, have dropped into the hundreds. But eliminating it remains challenging. Medical reporter Helen Brans?well explains why in ?Polio?s Last Act.? As you?ll learn in journalist William Swanson?s ?Birth of a Cold War Vaccine,? in the 1950s polio terrified the U.S. and U.S.S.R. almost as much as nuclear weapons. To test the oral vaccine, two scientists bridg?ed their countries? differences. They have saved uncounted thousands from the misery of this ancient scourge.
