Denon Urban Raver AH-C300 In-Ear Headphones

For Denon, the respected manufacturer of headphones and stereo components, the concept of intentionally bass-heavy earphones is relatively new territory. Thus, we'll forgive the company for the Urban Raver AH-C300 In-Ear Headphones' somewhat ridiculous name, and its head-scratching product descriptions. ("Bone-jarring" and "brutally powerful" are two phrases that should never describe anything I'm about to put in my ears.) Thankfully, it's only the marketing that's brutal?like most Denon products, the Urban Raver ($$249.99 direct)??is a solid pair of earphones. It does indeed produce tremendous bass, so purists can probably stop reading now, but for bass lovers it's a treat, and it comes with enough accessories and innovative features, like on-ear phone controls, to take the sting out of the slightly inflated price.

Design
Luckily the Urban Raver doesn't look as ridiculous as its name would suggest, and the Denon logo is the only thing you'll find emblazoned on the earphones. It's easy to imagine the black and metallic pair sitting alongside recent visually pleasing, classy designs like the Bowers & Wilkins C5 In-Ear Headphones ?or the Bose IE2 , both of which feature ear-stabilizers similar to the Urban Raver's. The earpieces are undeniably bulky, but they're lightweight, and provide a secure fit. However, over time, the fit can become a bit uncomfortable, and it's worth noting that the larger earpieces tend to push the cables against your jaw or cheek?a minor annoyance.

Denon throws in six pairs of silicon ear tips of various sizes, a pair of Comply foam eartips, and three total pairs of stabilizers in various sizes to ensure a secure fit. Also included with the earphones: a ?-inch adapter for larger headphone jacks, a detachable carabiner (a puzzling but harmless inclusion), and one of the sturdier, well-designed zip-up protective pouches we've seen.

The Urban Raver benefits from two notable design choices?a double-coated, tangle-free cable, and phone controls built into the right earpiece rather than the audio cable, which is the standard placement. This makes the cable less bulky (although this is presumably why the earpieces are?more?bulky), while Volume, Playback, Track Navigation, and Phone Calls are all handled by a click wheel that blends seamlessly with the overall design. Using it is simple and straightforward, and call clarity with the microphone, also built in to the right earpiece, is on par with the competition.Denon Urban Raver AH-C300 kit

Denon also offers a free app for iOS and Android users called Denon Club. Like most apps from audio manufacturers, it is mostly unnecessary, as the menus for music on iPhones and Android devices are already pretty straightforward, but it includes an EQ adjuster and access to local radio streams.

Performance
Denon makes no bones about what the Urban Raver is here to accomplish: BIG bass. The rationale is that modern mixes tend to have more low-end presence, with some sub-bass frequencies that are all but ignored by many high-end manufacturers. The company took a page out of the Monster Beats by Dr. Dre ?playbook and added gobs of low frequency response to the equation. Fortunately, the Urban Raver provides ample clarity in the bass realm, as well, so things are never muddy, while the mids and highs are crisp and articulate?indicative of a more typical, less bass-heavy pair from Denon.

On tracks like the Knife's "Silent Shout," the deep bass electronic drum hits have serious presence, and even at maximum volume, there is no distortion?not that anyone should be listening at levels that high. Other challenging, bass-heavy and resonant tracks, like Thom Yorke's "Cymbal Rush," are presented clearly and cleanly with a serious low frequency push. It's safe to say that if you love electronic music, hip hop, or modern pop with deep bass in the mix, the Urban Raver will not disappoint.

If you favor a flat response pair, look elsewhere. On classical tracks, like the John Adams' piece, "The Chairman Dances," the lower register strings sound like they're playing through a subwoofer. A finely-tuned subwoofer with nice clarity, I should add, but a sub nonetheless. The brass and wood percussion may sound bright and clear, as well, but this is far from the balanced pair that most classical or jazz lovers?or purists?would pick out. If that's what you're looking for, start by checking out the review of the Etymotic ER-4PT .

But if you love bass, you deserve a pair that can deliver it, cleanly and intensely. Perhaps you don't want the bass to be "bone-jarring," which just sounds painful, but you want the added boost that a powerful subwoofer brings to the mix. The Urban Raver delivers this quite well, with a little more clarity than other bass-heavy pairs like the Monster iSport Immersion In-Ear Headphones. Throw in the excellent carrying case, the cool tangle-resistant cable, the on-ear controls, and the plethora of ear-fitting accessories, and it's easy to forget the name. The $250 price, on the other hand, seems a bit high for a pair of earphones that contorts the balance of the mix so drastically, but the aforementioned accessories make it all a bit easier to accept.

Systems such as the ColecoVision, TurboGrafx-16 and 3DO may have been ousted from most home entertainment centers long ago, but they still have shelf space at the University of Michigan's Computer and Video Game Archive. Slashdot caught up with Engineering Librarian and Video Game Archivist Dave Carter and took a look inside the repository, which has curated around 35 classic and current-gen platforms and more than 3,000 different games. Having "one of everything" is the project's ultimate goal, but the logistics of acquiring every new game make achieving that feat a stretch. "Our realistic goal is to be sort of representative of the history of video games, what was important -- what was interesting," Carter said. "And then, not only to preserve the games, but also to preserve the game playing experience." As a "useable archive," patrons of UM's library can dig in and play at different stations with era-appropriate monitors and displays. While many visit for leisure, students have used the resource to research topics ranging from music composition to the effects of texting while driving (using an Xbox 360 racing title and steering wheel peripheral, of course). You can catch a glimpse of the collection in the video below or visit the archive's blog at the more coverage link.

Romney's GOP convention remarks rub Russia the wrong way

Romney's chilly comments about Moscow at the Republican convention stirred up Russian media. But foreign policy experts say Romney would handle Russia much as Obama has.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / August 31, 2012

Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney addresses delegates before speaking at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, Aug. 30.

Mitt Romney has raised hackles in Russia, not for the first time, with a tough set of convention remarks that suggest the US can expect a new cold war if he's elected in November.

Mr. Romney, who previously roiled Russians by declaring that Russia is "our number one geopolitical foe" ? a remark he later walked back a bit ? caused another outbreak of mass annoyance in Moscow today, with his insistence that under a Romney presidency the US will not be as indulgent toward Russia as President Obama has been.

Mr. Obama "abandoned our friends in Poland by walking away from our missile defense commitments, but is eager to give Russia's President Putin the flexibility he desires, after the election," Romney said, referring to to an embarrassing open mic conversation with then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, in which Obama asked the Russians to downplay criticism of US missile defense plans until after November.

"Under my administration, our friends will see more loyalty, and Mr. Putin will see a little less flexibility and more backbone," he added.

It wasn't much, but it was enough to set the Russian media to warning of a new cold war if Romney wins in November. "Once again Russia's on America's list of adversaries," shouted Thursday's headline in the independent Moscow daily Nezavisimaya Gazeta. The online newspaper Pravda.ru, which also publishes in English, warned that "Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan promise Russia Republican hell...? the official Republican candidates for president and vice-president support the radicalization of the country's foreign policies, particularly about the relations with Russia."

And a report issued Thursday by the international banking conglomerate Citi Inc. suggested that a Romney victory could drive Russia's stock market down by as much as 10 percent. "If Obama is concerned about restraining those domestic forces which would unleash cold war rhetoric, then it appears that Romney would encourage this process," with dire implications for Russian investment, the report said.

'Campaign sloganeering'

But Russian foreign policy specialists say there's probably less to Romney's rhetoric than meets the ear.

"I think this is largely campaign sloganeering," says Fyodor Lukyanov, editor of Russia in Global Affairs, a leading Moscow foreign policy journal.

Why The Demand For E-Commerce Fulfillment Services Is Growing ...

The demand for e-commerce fulfillment services is seeing a dramatic increase as companies seek out integrated systems to service the rising number of online consumers. ?This is a natural response to the changing way in which people are shopping. Several years ago, the Internet saw a significant escalation in online shoppers as people grew increasingly comfortable using online auction sites and other web-based selling platforms to find and secure goods.? The comfort level to exchange financial details has spread across broader consumer demographics and now, even older individuals who were formerly suspicious of online sales are now an emerging segment of participating in ecommerce.? Currently, many shoppers are now transitioning these sales activities to their mobile devices.

Creating Customers Via Mobile Connectivity

The introduction and adaptation of tablets has certainly helped to further the interest in online buying. ?Through the use of tablets and smart phones, people are now inundated with limited-time offers that inspire and encourage impulse purchases. Companies dabbling in neuromarketing have furthered this trend. ?Currently, more than half of all smartphone users are reported to be using mobile shopping apps.? Additionally, the conversion rate for tablet owners is now just 8% lower than that of desktop users.

For businesses, this has meant continual influxes of qualified traffic that is having a positive effect on their ecommerce sales. ?With the increase in sales, many companies are searching for options to streamline their operations, manage their expenses and continue to provide superior customer service.? For many companies outsourcing their e-commerce fulfillment services is the answer to accomplish all of this.

Convergence and The Ensuing Onslaught Of Techno-Consumerism

Technology is not just improving it is converging. ?In fact, studies have shown that the average individual has at least 2.5 ways of connecting to the web and at least one of these is kept continually on hand throughout the majority of the day. Another development has been the inclusion of social networking in major life events, decisions and even purchases. ?People have access to information and research as they make online purchases.? As a full convergence looms, and the average gadget user become less and less likely to make major decisions apart from any form of web connectivity, companies must prepare for the increase in ecommerce transactions.

Where E-commerce Fulfillment Comes In

E-commerce fulfillment services help businesses to capitalize by providing scalability. ?Companies, who are prepared for the changing minds and actions of consumers as technology converges, will be best able to glean maximum profits from new online spending habits. ?The most comprehensive of e-commerce fulfillment services will provide everything from warehousing, inventory management software, order fulfillment, marketing logistics and Internet marketing services.? They dramatically reduce the supply chain and thereby, make the monetary output and manpower that businesses must invest into getting their products sold and delivered, far easier to track, manage and enhance.

Services With Smooth Integration

The goal of every business then, is to select an e-commerce fulfillment option that can be seamlessly integrated with its existing operations. ?In such a partnership, a business remains able to solidify its brand and to retain any existing e-commerce team that it might have. ?With a seamless integration, these businesses can rise to meet the challenges that smarter technology and increasingly connected consumers have created.

Hints And Helpers For Your Home Improvement Project |

29-08-2012 by admin

A lot of work is need for some home improvement projects. Also, if you?re new to the whole world of home improvement, it can be a bit daunting. You must know the right time to gather supplies and the right time to hire a professional when partaking in any home improvement project.

If you hire a professional, see to it that their work is guaranteed. If you fail to read the contract, you may not have any recourse to correct problems that occur as a result of the work that is done. You want to know that you have guaranteed work and understand how long that guarantee will last.

In any major home improvement job, it?s a good idea to take things slowly when it comes to demolition work. Check for structural integrity in the wall cavity before you remove something. If electrical elements were damaged, it may be costly to make the necessary repairs.

Building and installing a home bar in the basement is a fun and worthwhile project. Putting in a bar can allow you to make your basement more personal. Whatever method one chooses to use, adding a bar is a great way to update a home.

Get an precise estimate before beginning any home improvement project. Without a clear idea of the total costs of a project, you may find yourself in a world of trouble if something does not go as planned. Be sure to get a couple of estimates and plan for an emergency fund.

Install a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are cheap and easy projects. They also save money on your energy bills. Because they circulate cooler air from the ground, you?ll run your air conditioner less.

If your house is located in the suburbs next to wooded or underdeveloped land, look into purchasing a six foot wooden fence or a chain link one around your backyard. This will prevent curious animals such as coyotes, rabbits and skunks away ? specifically if you want to have a garden.

Taking on a home improvement project on your own could turn out to be a wonderful experience. At other times, though, you need to call in some professional help. You will want to know as much as you can so you can keep an eye on your contractors. All of these things are important to all home improvement projects. Apply the advice from this article to get your home improvement project off to a successful start.

France opens inquiry into claims of Arafat poisoning

French prosecutors have opened a murder enquiry into Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's 2004 death near Paris following claims he may have died of polonium poisoning, sources told AFP Tuesday.

The probe comes after Arafat's family launched legal action in France last month following reports the veteran Palestinian leader may have died from radioactive polonium.

Arafat's widow Suha and his daughter Zawra lodged a murder complaint on July 31 in the Paris suburb of Nanterre. Arafat died at age 75 at a military hospital near Paris in 2004.

"A judicial murder enquiry has been opened, as expected following the complaint from Mrs. Arafat," a source close to the matter told AFP.

Confirming the enquiry, Pierre-Olivier Sur, a lawyer for Arafat's widow and daughter, said they were "happy" at the decision but would not comment further "so as to leave the judges to lead all investigations necessary to find the truth...."

The Palestinian Authority also welcomed the move, with senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat expressing hope that "we will reach the full truth on Arafat's death and who stands behind it."

"We hope the French investigation will satisfy our desire for truth, and that there will be a serious investigation to reveal the whole truth, in addition to an international investigation to identify all the parties involved in Arafat's martyrdom," he told AFP in Ramallah.

Allegations that the Nobel Peace laureate was poisoned were resurrected last month after Al-Jazeera news channel broadcast an investigation in which experts said they found high levels of polonium on his personal effects.

Polonium is a highly toxic substance which is rarely found outside military and scientific circles, and was used to kill former Russian spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 shortly after drinking tea laced with the poison.

Suha Arafat has said she backs exhuming her late husband's remains from his mausoleum in the West Bank town of Ramallah.

A Swiss radiology lab at the Lausanne University Hospital Centre said on Friday it has received Suha Arafat's go-ahead to test his remains for poisoning by polonium.

French news website Slate.fr on Tuesday published a copy of the medical report into Arafat's death and said his symptoms were not consistent with polonium poisoning.

Arafat was sent to the Percy military hospital in Clamart outside Paris after suffering from nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, acute diarrhea and an abnormally low amount of platelets in the blood.

Doctors at the hospital conducted a wide range of tests but were unable to determine the exact cause of his illness.

A few days after his arrival in France, Arafat lapsed into a coma and he died on November 11, 2004. No autopsy was conducted.

"The hypothesis of polonium does not stand up to scrutiny," Marcel Francis-Kahn, the former chief of rheumatology at Paris's Bichat hospital, told Slate.fr.

"All experts know that poisoning by radioactive material does not lead to the symptoms seen in Arafat," he said, noting that he also suffered no traditional effects of radiation poisoning such as hair loss and a massive drop in white blood cells.

At the time of Arafat's death, Palestinian officials alleged he had been poisoned by long-time foe Israel, but an inconclusive Palestinian investigation in 2005 ruled out poisoning, as well as cancer and AIDS.

Israel has consistently denied the allegations, accusing Suha Arafat and Palestinian officials of covering up the real reasons for the death of the former leader, who led the struggle for Palestinian statehood for nearly four decades.

Following the news of a French enquiry, Israel said it "does not feel this investigation is of any concern to it despite all the hare-brained allegations made against us," foreign ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.

"I hope this enquiry throws light on every aspect of this affair," he added.

Spielberg's rep denies he will make bin Laden film

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Steven Spielberg will not make a movie about the killing of Osama bin Laden based on an upcoming book, according to his spokesman Marvin Levy, who on Monday rebutted a report to that effect published over the weekend by the New York Post.

According to the Post's Page Six, the director and DreamWorks have been talking with the author of "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden" about adapting it for the big screen. The author of the book is retired SEAL Matt Bissonnette, who had been using the pseudonym Mark Owen until Fox News recently revealed his identity.

The Post cites multiple unnamed sources vouching for the talks between DreamWorks and Spielberg, but the denial is unequivocal.

"Neither Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Studios or DreamWorks Television will be optioning Mark Owen's book 'No Easy Day.'" Bissonnette (Owen) was reportedly a member of the team that took down bin Laden last May, and the book, which will be published on September 11, promises great detail about the mission to take down the perpetrator of numerous deadly terrorists act. The hunt for bin Laden is already the subject of a pair of other films due for release this year - Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and John Stockwell's "Code Name Geronimo."

As for Spielberg, his schedule is set for the moment. "Lincoln," a biopic of the 16th president that Spielberg directed, debuts this November, and the Hollywood legend already has his next project lined up - "Robopocaylpse." On top of those directing duties, he is producing a number of other film and television projects.

Krall plays 'Fly Me to the Moon' for Armstrong

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Diana Krall knows how to pay tribute to Neil Armstrong.

The jazz singer-pianist tenderly played the standard "Fly Me to the Moon" during a Saturday concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

She once was lucky enough to share a glass of wine with the first man to walk on the moon, Krall said. The astronaut died Saturday at 82.

"He's probably thinking, 'Do I have to listen to that song again?'" Krall said lightly, after gazing up at the night sky from the stage of the outdoor amphitheater.

The musician, who sent her love out to Armstrong's family, also had a message for her husband, Elvis Costello.

She performed the classic tune "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," changing the lyric to "his face," then said she sang it with Costello in mind on his birthday. The rock musician turned 58 on Saturday.

"Happy birthday, EC," Krall said later as she closed the concert with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by jazz man Alan Broadbent.

(AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

ACORN whistle-blower, former Obama voter: ?It?s time to stop voting on color? [VIDEO]

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) whistle-blower Anita Moncrief urged African-American voters not to allow Revs. Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to speak for them. Black voters should instead, she said, make independent decision based on candidates??qualities other than their skin color.

?One of the things I like to tell black people is that we are not victims,? Moncrief told The Daily Caller?s Ginni Thomas. ?We are not numbers, we are not statistics. We are not pawns.?

Moncrief pointed to Detroit as an example of a city where the policies of Democratic and black politicians have severely hurt voters.

?It is not acceptable, but for some strange reason we do not ask anything of our politicians. We let them come into our community and use us every four years for the election,? she said. ?We?re so accepting of the narrative, and we don?t look for ourselves to see what?s really going on.?

?It?s time to stop voting on color.?

Two new terms needed in the management of advanced prostate ...

Posted on by Sitemaster

It is rapidly becoming apparent that we are going to need two simple, new terms to be able to use in discussion of the evolution of progressive prostate cancer after ?standard? forms of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) have failed to work. So ? anyone got some good suggestions?

In the first place, the term, ?castration-resistant prostate cancer? is clearly no longer accurate (whether it was ever a good term or not). This term was coined, not so long ago, to describe men who had progressive disease after treatment with:

  • ?Standard? ADT, meaning?bilateral orchiectomy (surgical castration) or single-agent, continuous LHRH agonist therapy or continuous LHRH + antiandrogen therapy or almost any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Continous use of LHRH + antiandrogen therapy in any man who had?stopped responding to?single-agent LHRH therapy or any form of intermittent ADT and
  • Subsequent antiandrogen withdrawal

However, it is now clear that such men are not necessarily ?castration resistant? (i.e., unresponsive to hormonal therapies) because many of them clearly still respond to therapy with the new hormonally active agents like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. We need a new term to describe this set of men (who are still naive to drugs like abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide). Other terms that have been use to describe this condition in the past (regardless of whether the patients had metastatic disease or not) include ?hormone refractory prostate cancer? (HRPC) and ?androgen-independent prostate cancer? (AIPC). Neither of these terms is going to be appropriate either.

The other set of patients who are going to need to be defined are those men who have progressive disease after all known forms of hormonal manipulation, including all those described above as well as men progressing after treatment with drugs like

  • Ketoconazole and itraconazole
  • Low-dose estrogens
  • Abiraterone acetate
  • Enzalutamide

It may be that we should resusciate the term ?hormone refractory? to imply this set of patients, but there may be better terms. As just one example, the hormonal axis on which all hormonal therapy for prostate cancer is based is the so-called ?hypothalamic?pituitary?adrenal? (HPA) axis. If a patient becomes refractory to all attempts to manipulate the functions of that axis, perhaps we should define their condition?as ?HPA axis therapy resistant? or ?HPA axis therapy refractory? prostate cancer (HTRPC?).

Anyway ? now?s your chance to get creative!

ABC Family orders Jennifer Lopez-produced TV pilot

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? ABC Family says it green-lighted a series pilot from Jennifer Lopez's production company about a lesbian couple and their diverse family.

ABC Family said Thursday the comedy-drama pilot, titled "The Fosters," is about two women raising a "21st century," multi-ethnic mix of foster and biological kids.

Lopez will be an executive producer for the hour-long project. Casting was not announced.

Her company, Nuyorican, is in development on other TV series, including "Taming Ben Taylor," a romantic comedy starring the actress-singer, and "Sweet Little 15," a Mexican girl's coming-of-age story.

Lopez, who recently exited "American Idol" as a judge, also is developing films through her company.

Court sides with Lilly over cancer drug patent

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Drugmaker Eli Lilly and Co. said Friday a federal appeals court upheld the company's patent on its drug Alimta, protecting the cancer medicine from competition through Jan. 2017.

Alimta is a chemotherapy drug used to treat certain forms of mesothelioma and lung cancer. It brought in $2.46 billion in revenue in 2011, or 10 percent of total revenue for the year, according to the company's annual report. That was up 11 percent from 2010.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware affirmed a prior court ruling that the company's patent on the drug is valid.

Company shares rose $1.28, or 3 percent, to $43.69 in trading.
