Before next weekend?s football game, UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans have joined ?Rivals United for a Kure.? Founded earlier this year, the charity?s pledge campaign has already raised more than $250,000 by reaching out to fans, students and the alumni community of each school.
All funds raised for innovative research into underfunded cancers will be equally donated to the comprehensive cancer research centers of UCLA and USC.
Inspired by the upcoming documentary A City Divided (premiering Nov.12 at LA Live?s Club Nokia), this highlights the longstanding rivalry between the two teams.
With the support of former quarterbacks, UCLA?s Matt Stevens and USC?s Paul McDonald (the current radio game analysts for UCLA and USC), Rivals United has created a friendly competition between Trojans and Bruins. With bragging rights on the line, donations are made to enhance the fundraising efforts of each school and further the campaign towards its $2 million goal. Fans of both schools are encouraged to visit rivalsunitedforakure.org to donate.
High profile alumni of each school, celebrities, and sports enthusiasts alike will join together for the debut of the film about a rivalry that has both divided and united Los Angeles during the past 80 years.
Lung cancer, kidney cancer, esophageal cancer, Mesothelioma, all pediatric cancers, ovarian cancer, brain cancer, and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma are labeled underfunded cancers when the financial support for the cancer?s research is weighed against the toll of lives taken each year with grave disparities found. Other examples of underfunded research are prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, thyroid cancer, pancreatic cancer, Sarcoma, cervical cancer, bladder cancer and uterine cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 360,000 Americans lose their battle with the underfunded cancers listed above each year.
